    Exhaust manifold repairs?

    Hi All

have any if you experience of repairing worn joint faces on cast iron exhaust manifolds? The one off our GT6 is worn adjacent to the centre four ports. Is welding and re-machining an option? I briefly though about replacing it with a new tubular one until I fell off the chair when I saw the price

    Regards

I had one surface ground off a VW transporter because it had distorted, worked fine afterwards. Graham

hi bruce welding cast iron is quite easy when you learn the tricks,as for machining cast iron can be profiled or hand finished quite easily as it is very soft by comparison with other metals .if you are just building up a face this should be quite easy then you could probably get it quite flat at home with simple tools .post a picture of the offending article indicating the repair area.

Bruce, I can ask my specialist if he has any spare exhaust manifolds knocking around for a GT6 if you run out of luck .

Bruce, is the exhaust manifold the same as a Mk2 saloon? I have a 'few' spare of the latter!

          Cheers,
          Mike.
Mine since 1987. Finished a 20+ year rebuild in 2012. One of many Triumphs and a 1949 LandRover!

              Hi Chas

Thanks for your kind offer of assistance. Hopefully it won't be needed on this occasion.

              Regards

                Hi Mike

Yes it is the same manifold. Thanks for the kind offer. I am going to ask our local machining company how much to flash grind it. Hopefully that will be cheaper than postage of such a heavy item but I could well be back in touch.

                Regards

                  Hi Bruce
Don't dismiss buying a new one, assuming they are available.
Last year I took one of my Stag exhaust manifolds to a reputable local engineering company to have the old studs drilled out and 3 new studs inserted with new brass nuts. They charged me £70
If I could turn back the clock I would price up a new one from Rimmers and investigate availability of good used one on e bay
                  Regards
                  Steve
