    New Locking Barrels.

Having just bought a pair of locking barrels for the doors, I find they have no protrusions from the barrel allowing the barrel to turn without a key inserted...am I missing something obvious? Surely there must be something to stop the barrel turning, heeeeeelp.....

    Hi ANdrew,

There should be some brass bits that stick out I believe (the tumblers) I have bought a whole new lock kit and the supplier said not to remove the keys without the lock in the barrel!

I wonder if the keys were removed prior to you purchasing them and the tumblers have fallen out!!

I agree there should be some brass tumblers sticking proud of the barrel...There are on the ones we have removed, they do not revolve in the handle bowl, but are a bit past it, so I bought shiny new ones, which incidentally had one key inserted and one not.The keys have the name "BASTUCK" on them...I don't know if that is a good, bad or foreign make! I should have thought a reputable firm would supply good stuff, so I'm still wondering if I have missed something... These two small items were over 40 quid...

Wouldn't that be a revelation!! Mind you for £40 you should expect decent locks.

This is what they should look like:

The brass bits are the tumblers, which spring out when the key is withdrawn and, if the barrel isn't in a housing at that time, they will probably end up all over the floor with little springs to boot.
          The answer isn't 42, it's 1/137

They do indeed look just like that, as that is where they came from! The brass tumblers are all present and seem reluctant to move until the key is inserted. The tumblers are in the same position when the key is in and out. Seems odd that the locks haven't flown to bits like you suggest...

Grease/lubricant on tumblers frozen or degenerated or not there at all. Try a little spot of something like WD 40 on one of them and see if it frees up.

All 7 tumblers are present and move under spring loaded presure when the key is inserted...none protrude when there is no key in and none protrude when the key has been removed, they only move out when the key is pushed in or pulled out...which leads me to think these locks have been assembled incorrectly....Still confused

when the key is pushed in the tumblers will be pull in this will allow, the lock to turn, when the key is removed the tumblers will come out and hit the door handle mech inside door handle and you should not be able to turn the lock,

try this with your old lock barrels first be carefull as there are small springs behind the tumblers that can come flying out

The consensus is the tumblers should be protruding when there is no key in the barrel...these locks don't do that...I think a call to Rimmers is needed.

i know its not going to help you cost wies, but take your locks to a lock smith he will be able to tell you if there put together wrongly, then you can be sure take them back to where you bought them from, but they are easy to repair
