Radiator Filler Neck--Need Your Advice

Hi all,

I have some minor soldering work to do on the radiator. While it is on the work bench I like to correct the filler neck which doesn't stand vertical on the water box (5 to 10 degr. out).
My question: does anyone know how the filler neck is connected to the water box:

--is the filler neck just placed onto a circle hole in the water box and then soldered together (like sketch 1)?

--or is there a kind of a tube formed/pressed onto the water box and the filler neck goes over this tube and both parts are then soldered together (like sketch 2)?

Any advice is highly welcome.

Hi Klaus,

Sorry for the delay in responding. As you may guess from the lack of people answering I think nobody knows for certain, however my guess is as dia 1 or a version of it.

I believe it's diagram 1, though the neck might protrude further into the rad rather than flush.

Judging by the way some seem to crack and leak at the base of the tube if overtightened, I'm guessing picture 1.

Definitely diagram 1,
However the neck does go further down in to the radiator. How do I know? Well mine had a leak around the base so took it off cleaned up all the old solder and replaced as good as new that was 2 years ago.

Many thanks for all your answers, that helps for my planned work. I admit that I didn't really expect an answer as my question was very special -- even for a community of more than 400 active forum members.

And like in real life, there is always another possibility/solution: I have just checked how deep the neck goes further down into the water box: on my radiator it is 8 to 10 mm.
