    Cant tighten steering belt

My power steering belt was slipping and could tighten no further (mafco belt) so invested in a new one from Rimmer so must be good it was made in China but still cant tighten bracket reaches its limit.
Old and new belts appear the same size.
    What to do ?
    1,Try to find a smaller belt ?
2,Extend the range of the slot in the bracket i.e. cut the end out ?

    Any other suggestions.

    Strange,
I would head to an auto parts and find a 1/2" smaller belt.

I too have found that Rimmers' PAS belt takes the pump to its full adjustment and the belt still feels slacker than I would like. However it seems to do the job perfectly well and doesn't seem to slip.

Are you sure that your pump isn't too tight ?

      Cheers

What size does it say the belt is and who is the manufacturer?

            Hi Chas,

i have cut and pasted from Peters website below

            Power Steering Belt GCB11113
            £7.05 INC VAT

Cogged Drive Belt for the Power Steering Pump from German OE Component Supplier Continental

It is specified as a 10mm wide belt with a 1110 to 1113 mm outer circumference.
The belt we supply is the right size and has the correct V section meaning it adjusts correctly, grips the pulley properly, both optimising performance and minimising wear.
Some belts on the market are as little as 1090 which is too tight, and the last QH belt we measured was 1114 too long.
Avoid getting grease or oil on a drive belt as this will cause a jerky action.

            hope this helps mate

              Hi 38 rover,

You may well find, as with many Pattern parts, that it's not the same specification as the original.

What I mean by that is it may be the same length but the V profile is slightly smaller so it sit's lower in the grove of the pulleys effectively making it to long. Can you measure/compare it's profile with the old one

                Have checked both belts
The old one (in good condition) Mafco is alittle under 10mm wide and 8mm deep it has printed on it MAFCO-C MFB 1125
New belt x Rimmer DAYCO (PRC) 10A1113C 10mm wide 10mm deep
If the numbers mean what I think then mafco belt is longer by 12mm (1/2")
checked against each other the Rimmer belt is a little smaller
Both belts bottom out when pump is adjusted and both seem to slack when tension is checked a 1110mm belt might do it if available??

If you have a good spare shop locally take the current one along and see if you can get one slightly smaller - also, the ps belt does not need to be too tight, allow for 10mm deflection at mid point.
Best idea though is get a proper one from LD Parts

Tomorow a visit to our local motor factor to see if he has a 1110 belt.
If I order from UK anything up to 14 days can even be longer so local purchase is best
Thanks to all for the intrest as always

Cheers for the info, a handy bit of information. I bought a 1113 Gates belt from my motorfactor whilst picking up some bits for my modern, so I shall report back in due course.

That is a bit strange. Dayco belts seem to be half decent most of the time (an old Porsche specialist of mine (and another local one) used to prefer them to ContiTech, as do chaps on the other side of the pond...).

I have just fitted a 1113 mm GATES belt w/o a problem. It is listed as 9.5 mm belt width.

Isn't it most likely that the engineers back in the sixties, when the Stag was developed, didn't think in mm so they choose 3/8" = 9,5 mm for the belt width?
