    Headrest Question

    Hi all.

Took my headrests out today fed up with piles of dust foam coming out of them every time i move the seat or touch them. if squeezed it was just a rush of air inside
Anyway my question is after emptying out just dust foam no formed foam at all in there.
I was left with the vinyl cover of course and inside a sort of foam cover looking thing is this part of the old headrest foam used with the inside just degraded or is it a cover that a new headrest foam slips into.

    Many thanks in advance

    Hi Cliff,

Easy enough job. You can buy ready formed foams which sandwich the metal/wood centre part however having parted with good money for a pair myself I am sure I could have done just as good a job if I'd just bought myself a bit of ordinary foam.

They do need to be stuffed in to give a good firm headrest.

    Cheers

    Julian

      Cheers Julian.
Yes Looks one of the easier jobs.
But as said above do I put the new foams into this brown fabric cover I have been left now its been emptied.
Then put both into the vinyl or just the new foams.
I nearly threw it in the bin with the rest of the rubbish that came out but thought better of it.

        Hi Cliff,

I've done about four headrests and never seen a fabric cover in any of them. Mine seem fine without and with just the foam on the wood/metal 'core'.

        Cheers

The original foams were often made up of composite (recon) foam, covered with a thin foam overlay. The overlay is needed because recon can be a bit lumpy.

The old recon just disintegrates and leaves the outer foam. You can refoam the headrests by cutting your own foam from sheet or block foam but it takes skill/practice to get a nice shape and get the two matched up. If you dont mind paying more you can but ready moulded foams such as Aldridge which takes the skill outof it.

              Ah thanks chris .
That has cleared that up so if i buy moulded foam i can disguard the covers and just put the foam in.
Just did not want to chuck the covers out before i bought the new moulded foams.

              Thanks cliff.

                hi Cliff,

spray them with silicone ( Mr Sheen will do) before fitting, it will help to shape them eaiser, put your foam in the cover first so as you can manipulate it to what you want, then push the centre part in, thats how i did mine, worked a treat

Managed to get it started last week after the snow went and it warmed up a wee bit a friend held the choke on the faulty cable and it fired up on the 4th attempt not perfect but at least it started.
I followed a starting advice ian gave me.
A fully charged battery, choke held on manual by a friend, turn ignition on wait until pump stops clicking which was around 30 secs fourth turn hey presto bit trumpy cold but ran sweeter after a min or two.
Since then new plugs fitted and new choke cable on order should be here early next week.
Further checks did reveal 2 of the contact points on the dizzy cap and 2 leads were green corroded so cleaned out all strange how it was just 2. Looked as if wet had got in 2 somehow.
I have not tried to start this week before a new choke cable is fitted.
As i have been doing a few little jobs on the stag just fixing bits and bobs. I have noticed a puddle under the car and i await for it to go into a friends garage end of the month to get it onto the ramp and see what it is hopefully he can fix it and its not to expensive.
                    Cheers.
                    Cliff.

Just like to thank everyone for the advice on the headrest foams and fitting.
Went without the covers in the end just put the new moulded foams in. All now fitted with nice full plump headrests.
Just leaves the rest of the seats to be done now after a few more mechanical issues addressed and when funds dictate.

                      Cheers Cliff.
