Which headlight bulb?

Hi all

A quick and easy one for you. One of my headlights has just failed and before replacing it I was wondering what you all think of the different types of replacements.

All four lights are Lucas, so I assume that they are original (the car is a 1972 Mk1). So do I get basic H1 Halogen 448 bulbs (£0.86 each on Amazon) or upgrade all four to H1 Xenon (£2.79 pair) or something else entirely?

Bearing in mind that I want to use the car next Saturday, and work has me working away most of this week I need an easy solution rather than one involving lots of rewiring, extra relays etc.

What do you recommend?

Hi Richard,

We could always look out for a Stag with only three lights next Saturday !

But seriously, unless you've been really unhappy with your lights up until now, and you're fairly strapped for time, why not just replace like with like - you could always convert later.

My car came with Xenons and they've got relays so I guess if you were to fit them then you'd have to fit relays which, although not especially hard, will take you a bit longer than just replacing a bulb.

Halfords do some extra bright bulbs that draw the same current as the originals. I have those in mine and they do a great job.

Definitely worth considering as Dave says. I replaced the ones in my old 04 Meriva with 'uprated' ones and there was a marked difference but 2-3 times the price.

Thanks for the advice. I'll probably just change the one that's blown with the same - for speed, but maybe uprate them all later.
