    Hard Top Clips

For those of you that have rebuilt hardtops before can you give me some advise on which clipsare for the side strips that run below the side windows as the attached picture is confusing me:?

Also how do you get the side and back trims off?:?

The clips for the side and back trims are the same, 630881 on the drawing. They are held in place by very small rivets - 3/32" maybe?

The trims have a short lip on the top edge and a long lipon the lower edge. To remove the trim you need to lever the top edge of the trim, which hasthe small lip, away from the clips then slide the trim downwards off the clips.I found itbest to locate the position of the clips and lever it off each clip individually.

Youmay wellfind the clips are rusted and the rivets corroded and some of the clips will come away with the trim.

I normally just drill the rivets out from the inside.

I fitting of the side trimsa case of rivetingthe clips onto the sidesthen levering the trim over them? I don't see how the trimwill slide on as has been suggested before due to it being curved.I don't want to go down the 'self tapper' route.

I did it the other way, fitted the clips to the trim then lined them up with the holes in the hard top and pop rivetted them on.

From the inside edge of the hard top into the clip on the outside

I see that that would work, but how did the dealers fit them with the rivet heads under the trim?

I have got the trims of thanks lads for the help. The side ones fell off due to the clips had rusted away:shock:and the back one had a combination of self tappers and what looked like big dollops of glue stuff!

I am ordering the correct clips etc tonight so they can be put back on properly ater the bare metal respray.

                        Mark,

IFAIR, by clipping over. With all the hard toptrim, I filled the voids with petroleum jelly before clipping them on, so I couldn't have slid them along or it would all have come out. I then sealed them in place with marine-grade silicon sealant, so no water can get at the clips and start the rusting process again.

Judging from the responses so far, have I been fitting the rivets back to front? Was the factory method to rivet the clips to the hardtop then fit the trim?

                            Nick,

That's how they were fitted to the one I restored a few years ago, but it doesn't mean it is the only way. If your way works, and it is easier, then why not? Unless you were up against the most pedantic of concours judges, I guess it doesn't matter. The beauty of DIY Stag ownership is finding better/easier ways of achieving the same result.

                              Hi Guys

                              I need some advice again!

How do the clips on the upper front trim fit on? It has black plastic clips and pop rivets, do I fit the plastic clips in the trim then pop rivet on or do I pop rivet the clips on to the hard top then fit the trim?:?
