Not Stag - has anybody rebuilt a K-series?

Am having fun and games with a 1.8 K-series rebuild on a MG ZS at the moment. Started off as a head gasket job but I'm now looking at having to shim the liners due to them being a few though below the deck of the block also have some dodgy threads in the oil ladder so will be replacing it with the uprated one. Just wondering if anyone has any experience of resealing the liners and whether Wellseal is the way to go?

not entirely cartain on this but we have a freelander with the same engine and years ago when i suspected hgf research i did at the time suggested if the liners moved the block was scrap ! iirc !check it out cos i cant remember for sure if im correct about this or mixed up the facts.not sure about wellseal for this application but google LANDYZONE the forum will tell you pretty much all you need to know about the engines they realy are quite a robust good lump just a bit bad mouthed like the tv8.

I've got a 1.8 in my Midget and that is one problem I haven't met (yet). As far as I know, the liners sit on a flexible ring at the base of the engine and this can go, leading to the problem you are describing. I presume replacements are available which would bring the liners back into the correct position.
When you come to cleaning the head, if you turn it upside down you'll see the water journals are haphazard triangular affairs with casting burrs still attached, which must affect the coolant flow. I drilled these out using a 10mm drill which cleans them out nicely and opens up the journals. My engine churns out in excess of 160bhp and doesn't overheat, even on track days where it is sorely abused, revving past 8k in the low gears.

I have no experiences of this engine but all the Diesel engines with Wet Liners I have done over the years have had a very robust O ring or similar at the base, this makes the liner sit proud in the block and is then pushed down when the head is fitted. Cavitation was always the main reason for having to change them but is overcome nowadays by dosing the system with something called DCA which circulates suspended in the coolant.

Pop down and see Chris Foulds at Chris Foulds Motors in Honley.
He's a Lotus specialist and has loads of experience of the K in the Elise, he looked after my Elise for 8 years.

Used to do K series in Rover dealer, and the previous comment about low liners is right - the block should be scrapped. I've thought about shimming the liners up, but the problem is there is no guarantee that the land in the block is even, as the liner has been "shuffling" and may have worn canted. If you really have to salvage the block, you could have the land machined square, and have a liner specially made with a thicker rim...

We used no sealers on the liners that I can remember...

I used to have an MGF in the past and have a good mate who runs www.britishlegends.co.uk and knows these engines well.

He also sells the modified oil rails for them on eBay

Many thanks for all the tips, might have to put another block in, I've already had to scrap the head... At least building up another engine will be easier on the bench.
