    oil cooler- advice please

Hi all, the p/o has fitted a rimmer oil cooler kit without a thermostat, its an older kit that allows the original oil filter to be used, not a spin off filter, the question is does the stag need an engine oil cooler? if so should it be fitted with a thermostat? especially in the winter, if the answer is yes it means changeing all the fittings and to a spin off filter as Rimmers don`t supply a thermostat kit for this old style adaptor.

    advice appreciated, thanks Derek

You can get thermostatic bypasses that simply fit in the lines to the cooler so no need to change anything drasticly. But yes a stat is preferable, especially if you drive your car in winter. I think the oil cooler does help longevity if you drive yours fairly hard or do lots of motorway miles, but that's just my opinion.

Definitely yes, you need a 'stat for the oil cooler.

The in line 'stat is probably the easiest option here, it is a cut the hoses and jubilee clip it in place type of fitting.

On the Stag engined TR I have a thermostat fitted into the base of the spin on filter conversion.
I had an oil cooler fitted to the straight six engine without a thermostat and I wanted to use it with the Stag engine, and this was an easier option as it meant I could convert to a spin on filter at the same time

Don't have a 'stat on mine & I use it all the time, without apparent problems.

I took the oil cooler thermostat off my stag.It leaked and I dont think it is a necessary item, especially in NZ.I just joined the two hoses to the oil cooler with metal tubing and used double the amount of hose clips. No oil leaks from there and 45lbs oil pressre at 100KPh.

spin on conversion and oil cooler on mine with no stat, IMHO you need a stat if you're running through the winter but not for summer use only. Oil protects best at its correct operating temperature which in summer is easily achievable but in winter temperatures I think you would struggle to achieve this

Thanks all, the car is mainly summer use, I will investigate the inline stat
