Brian, i did mine recently, I was given advice to pack it with vaseline, and then remove the king lead from the distributer and pull the inertia switch, then turn it on the key until the oil light went out, it took about 1 minute for the light to go off

Just a thought folks, I'd be reluctant to run the starter motor for a full minute without pause, it gets very hot indeed. Martin.
Better still, leave the distributor out and use a cordless drill on the pump shaft, set anticlockwise to get pressure up - that way, if you made any mistake doing the pump you'll save the bearings from any oil starvation.
Every oil pump job I do gets the vaseline and leccy drill treatment....

Ooooh ! I like the sound of that ! Martin.
PS, I've been pulling off the king lead for that purpose for 40 years, never had a coil fail.
Nor me - seen a couple of electronic ignition knackered by pulling the king lead at the coil and the spark cluttering off to the LT terminals though...
Many thanks folks, vaseline it is then! I've never had the oil pump off the Stag before and was not sure what I needed to do, I'm changing the plugs too so it will be easy to whiz it over with them out. Hopefully the new O rings will cure my annoying oil leak!
