    Hood Side Catches

Does anyone have an opinion on how the Mk1 side catches compare with those on the Mk2? Does anyone have a Mk1 system that works OK?

In case anyone is unaware, the right hand catch on the Mk1 is automatic latch and release; it operates by gravity when you lower and raise the hood. The Mk2 has the same type of catch each side which latches automatically, but is released manually.

I can only assume Triumph changed the Mk1 system to improve it, but I don't think they made a good job of it.

No Martin, not of the Mk1 catch. The right hand catch is very simple, just a hook that swings down when you lower the hood. The left catch iis a spring loaded catch which is manual release. The upshot is that you can operate from just one side without stepping into the road which is quite a good system if it worked.

Hi Chris, from experience my opinion is that the mk1 system is useless. The swinging hook frequently releases and results in the hood twisting and jamming when you try to get it out of the hoodwell.
I fitted a proper catch to mine and it is much better.

You will find yourself spending much more time in the road trying to raise a hood with the swinging hook. Triumph 'upgraded' it with good reason.

This is useful. I didn't realise there was a difference. I bought two new ones from The Brothers which I guess are Mk2. Damn there goes another concours point.
On a related subject anyone know where the catch warning label is supposed to be stuck?

Hi Nick, If it's the one I think you mean it goes in the hood well on the top of the back edge of the N/S (left had) cubby panel just right of centre.

Car looks great by the way.

                Hi Chris,

From when I worked in a Triumph dealership back in the 70s, I vaguely recollect lots of Stags coming in with jammed hoods. I think it was the catch that was supposed to operate by gravity just didn't so that's why they changed them to the same both sides.

                Cheers

Hi Chris, do you have a picture of the Mk2 catches in situ and with the rear hoop locked in place, ideally without the hood on. Not asking for much am I.

I have the Mk1 and have bought some Mk2 catches but they don't look to be a straight swap. The Mk1 catches line up with the "top hat" but the Mk2 look out by quite a way when fitted to the existing holes. Should I be drilling new holes? Sorry to add a question to your thread, I'll start a fresh if you wish.

                  Thanks
                  Brian

Hi Brian. The left side catches should be a straight swap as the holes are the same. The right hand one had different holes, so you will have to drill two new ones.

                      Thanks Chris,

I found some pictures of the catch on a previous reply of yours. I've also sent a pm if you are able to reply.

                        Hi Nick,
Mines stuck on the passenger side cubby panel on the top of the cubby, same on my sons car both built in 77.
                        regards,
