Gears not selecting

I have a strange issue. Istart the car and run for 2 or 3 minutes andthendrive about 20 metres to the end of my driveway. Engage neautral waiting for a gap in the traffic but when I reselect drive, drive (or reverse) is not selected. Moving the automatic gear shifter up and down a few times in panic and then it engages.

Once I am going, the autobox functions fine changing up and down as expected. It only seems to happen at the start of a journey. I initially thought it was because I had not used the car for a year butI have been using it now for a couple of weeks but it is still happening

Anyone had this before?

Any suggestions what this could be?

Is it easily fixable?

Hi Steve

I'm proberly stating the obvious but have you checked the transmission fluid level? I had a similar problem, topped it up and it's been fine ever since.

At risk of stating the bleedin' obvious, don't select neutral while your waiting for the gap and problem over.:?

Yes, I am, been here for 14 years now,have thethe full thing, Swiss wife and two Swiss kids but noAlp Horn. I work in Bern and live about 30 minutes away in a sleepy farming area called Solothurn.

So if any one is interested in real Swiss Cheese or Fondue in exchange for real English Bacon, Brown Sauceand Strong Cathedral Cheddar, Just let me know

My stag I imported from the uk coming up to 2 years ago.

i drove through Switzerland last year, and got stopped at the borderswiss/ austriathe three blokes in my car had not got back from the bar till 5am and it was 10am at the time, glad i had been on the orange juice all night and went to bed at 1am, as the customs officer stuck his nose against mine, took passports away for 10 minuites ,i felt like Dicky Attenborough in the great escape, We always wondered after what the D+d rules are in Switzerland? Thought the Motorway services were fantastic.

Next time you travel through Switzerland, let me know and we meet up for a beer and tell you lots of interesting stories of Switzerland. It is a wonderful place as long as you play by the rules which can be a little strict at times. Swiss like process and procedures which explains your issues at customs.

Drink driving over here is very serious if you get caught but I guess this is the same in the UK. Fines over here are calculated as a % of your earning so it can get quite expensive!

So tell me just how mad are you as a cyclist? Switzerland is really geared up for cycling. I use my daily to work. If you are a keen cyclist you will like it here.

I raced in switzerland a couple of times in the 80's, I know its good for the leisure cyclist too, when iwas there last year i was on my way back from Friedrichshafen, there is a massive trade show for the cycle trade there each sept.

I have raced at least a couple of time s each year since 1978, was on the national squad for a few years and racedin europe for a few seasons, realised i did not have what it takes , either mental or physical, at the age of 21 and got a proper job. being in volved in the cycle trade is good as i relate to the products, mad on cycling is a better description , but if a moutain pass at 60mph on 23mm tyres is mad then count me in

Blocked valve blockstrainer would be my first port of call........... very common BW problem, drop the tranny sumpand pop out thecrosscut machinescrews holding the tin strainer assy on....... give it a wash out in thinners and refit................ DON'T use any form of jointing compound on the strainer or sump pan gasket!!!!!!


Just a thought.... you have got the correct dipstick, haven't you??? When you drain the tranny to do the strainer, measure the amount you put back in..... something is kicking around in the back of my mind that 35 and 65 dipsticks are different lengths....

Hi Steve.

Ever so funny what expats ask to bring when living abroad.

Bacon, sausages, pork pies& cheddar cheese was my request when I lived in Norway.

We used to have a cheese & pickle night at our local watering hole every time one of us returned from blighty.
