    Dum Dum Alternatives

I'm sure this subject has come up before, but I can't find anything definitive from the search.

Has anyone got a recommendation for a dum-dum like sealant that seals, but doesn't set and act like an adhesive? I have just dismantled my heater and I will want to re-assemble it in such a way that it will be possible to dismantle it again should I ever need to!

    Cheers

If you are that worried about dumdum setting, just apply to one side and then give the other face a light squirt of silicone spray so the dumdum squidges but doesnt stick....

            Hi Dave,

Sam (Staginhiding) found something a bit similar on a roll. It was more 'plasticky' and a bit less mouldable but not too bad a substitute.

Thing is, I don't know what it's called or where he got it. Sam ?

            Cheers

                Hi Russ,

If you get some can I swap a can for all the bits I've got for you ? Nothing beats the original

                Cheers

Thanks Russ, I will order some up shortly.

It has been out of production since 2010 I think. General info available seems to suggest that one of its ingredients was banned by the EU and that Eldro's attempts at an alternative didn't wor well so they withdrew it. That makes sense as the dum dum I put on my heater a year or two ago which was one of the later batches has gone soft and sticky. (There is actually a tin on ebay for £50 at the moment!!!) 321073472134

Search for 'butyl strip' on ebay and you will find several suitable products such as :

I much prefer this material to dum dum.

If you can buy it Russ, buy it all. I managed to get a 500ml tin last year after talking a mate of mine (who is a motor factor) in to ringing round all his mates and suppliers and he found 1 tin.

I have found a Buytl rubber sealant in "gunable" form (Everbuild 145 Butyl Rubber sealant is similar) and does not harden.
DumDum has gone from the market so If you can get any original tins Russ then it could be your pension sorted looking at the price on fleaybay, I've got about 1/2 a tin left.
I used the Buytl on the doors of my SEAT as they suffer the same problems as the A4 and Golf in that they leak into the car and you get soggy mats its survived the winter so far.

                              Dave,

This would do it and would be easy to apply from a mastic gun frame, I used it, on the advise of someone, to seal the chrome work on my car.

There is also a product called Glasticord which comes on a roll. it's a preformed thin, round continuous sealing strip that is non setting, it is used for sealing bolt on car panels etc.

                              Ian.

(I do have a new unopened tin of Dum Dum which I am now taking Sealed bids on)
