    Balancing wheel weight positions

Having just had the inner tubes removed from my wheels (PO) and the tyres rebalanced i noticed the position of the weights are all in the middle of the wheel rims, has anybody else got their weights in a similar position?, i think i will put the 100gram weighted wheel on the back, what do you think as you boy's will know these wheels better than I.

Not seen weights in that position before but that's where they must need to be, the old weights were on the outside and hammer on type.

Yes mine are too but i did ask for them to be put there as on the outside stick on weights make it a pain to clean them alloys and look pug ugly.

      Hi Martin,

Yep, mine are in the same position as yours.

They used to be on the outside and, as Glenn says, they looked pug ugly so when I had them balanced I asked the shop if they'd be ok on the inside. They said it would be fine and I can confirm that they are

      Cheers

I've seen plenty of weights in that position (they are in that position on a few of my cars) and it is more pleasing to the eye (I.E no weights on the outside of the rim). IME one way to reduce the amount of weights you have on your wheels is to get pricey tyres!

On a previous car (and my current one) the budget tyres always seemed to have an array of weights on them. The Michelins my new car came with in addition to when I started to fit them onto my daily only have one weight, and a damned small weight at that. Surprised was not the word.

Hi Martin, the wheels are made of recycled saucepans by little men in sheds, they're appalling ! You'll never improve the weight positioning, sticky weights on the inside are the only option. You're lucky they're balanced, the centre hole, where they're usually balanced from, is often not in the middle. They are a handsome looking wheel, and hammered weights on the outside not only damage them, but look dreadful. Martin.

The other reason there are so many nowadays is that they are not allowed to use lead I believe.
Martin you are correct they do look good but who made them? I think they were just rough sand cast and left up to the owner to polish them.

The stick-on weights seem to fall off. I guess the inside of the wheel needs to be really clean (is that likely). Some suggest that you need to run the car so that centrifugal force helps bed then in. Not sure about that one, but I know that all the weights fell off my freshly refinished wheels when I left them stacked in the garage.

                    Quite right.

When I had my Stag's wheels balanced at ATS, the fitter used something to wipe the inside of the wheel which cleans it and removes any traffic film / polish etc to provide a clean surface for the weights to stick to.

Been fine in the last year and a half and none have come off.

                    Regards

Your wheels have been "Back Balanced".
99% of wheel balancers still in operation should have that option on their machine.
I balance wheels that way most of the time (some for looks & some because there is no lip on the outer rim).
Its my job by the way.
I even balanced my Stag's winter wheels (well.......Mk1 Steels) like that too.
                      Just for the look.
                      No problems at all.
Super Buff or Thinners can be used to clean the surface & sometimes even a wire brushing first.
Regular visits to dodgey looking car washes which blast the life out of your wheels with a jet washer could dislodge the stick on weights.
                      Otherwise its all good.
