    100mpg Volkswagen

A couple of years ago, I remember somebody talking about a forthcoming Volkswagen that would achieve 100 mpg and cost just a few thousand pounds.

Was it on here, or was it somewhere else ? - I can't remember (I've done a search and can't find it so maybe it wasn't here after all!) However, I reckoned at the time that 100mpg was a definite possibility but it would cost far more than just a few thousand pounds.

Anyway, for anyone who's interested, it looks like it's coming now but I bet it'll be many, many thousands of pounds - VW are remaining coy about pricing at the moment.

    Cheers

    Julian

looks like you need to be signed in is that correct?
I still think the way forward with all of this using current technology is to use a form of diesel electric i.e batteries for town use and the diesel kicking in when required . this means that the diesel generator can be spec'ed to run at a constant speed and load thus enabling the best tuning / running load combination and the traction is provided by polyphase motors at the hubs.
When I was in my teens I started to look at this but never had any money to do it and any way back in the late 60's who cared about 100 mpg when you could buy some decent American muscle car and fuel was about 7/6d a gallon, always wanted a Ford Econoline with some smart painted graphic down the side.

Toyota sorted this all out a few years ago, with the Hydrogen fuel cell, same performance and range as petrol, the downside being the big bucks needed for R & D, running costs are tiny. Electric cars are a waste of time, neither motor nor battery technology are up to it yet. What happened to Japanese ceramic engine development, or Ford lean burn technology ? politics that's what ! Just wait till the oil companies are forced, one way or the other, to release the patents they've bought and suppressed for 60 years. I'm betting that 100 mpg has been around for a long time. I hope VW are successful, but I doubt we'll ever see more than show cars and publicity. Rant officially over Martin.

Motors are defiantly there Martin but at as you say the Batteries have a long way to go. Electric is a stop gap technology and if you look at the bigger picture creates more pollution then ICE's i.e. Generating the power to charge them and putting them in Land fill when there spent. They even have term for it, "Well to Wheel" for working out the cost.

The biggest cost with hydrogen is the infrastructure needed for storage and refilling. It was trialed in London, cost millions for 2 vehicles then quietly dropped after a year.

        Ian.

        p.s.

I could tell you many stories about the amount of public money that has been wasted in the name of pollution,

How about spraying the roads with glue at night to trap particulates and sweeping them up in the morning to avoid the EU fines

            Hi Guys,

Can anybody see that attachment or do you need to be signed in as Paul mentioned ? I've tried it on two computers and I can go to the pdf but that may well be because I have the relevant cookies on my computers.

Anyway, although I'm not a big fan of VW, they do say: Volkswagen has confirmed that its XL1 Super Efficient Vehicle, the most fuel-efficient production car in the world, with a fuel consumption value of 0.9 l/100 km (approx. 313 mpg) will go into production at the company’s Osnabrueck factory in Germany.

            Sorry, I said 100 mpg - they actually say over 300mpg !!

            Cheers

            Julian

I seem to remember seeing this car in Thunderbirds (not silver though) when I was very much younger than I am now and the Stag was just hitting the showrooms........

The door gap on one is a better fit than the other ....... still not the same shade of green though!!
Is that a "ghost cat" I see or does it just blend in with the surroundings.

Interesting it says about gluing the vehicle together, cant say as its design makes me want to go out and buy one but then again I cant say that any modern car does it for me, well not ones I can afford.
