Advice on steering rack gaiter leak

I'm not a fan of additives normally but I seem to remember reading on here that some have had success at curing slight rack leaks with an additive

I've done a search but can't find anything. Has anybody got a recommendation ? MOT due this week

    Cheers

    Julian

My opinion is worth exactly what you paid for it.

These things work by making your rubber bits swell up a bit. How effective that is in fixing any leak will depend on what is causing it in the first place - but I certainly would not be looking at it being a long term fix for anything.

            Good luck - Adrian.

Yep, good point Adrian, thanks. That's the sort of reason that I'm not a fan of additives but with MOT this week and a leaking rack .... It's a case of sometimes, where needs must....

Oddly, although there has been a very slight leak for a while, when I jacked it up high to check everything underneath, quite a bit more fluid came out

              Cheers

I used the Lucas fluid for the same reason Julian. It got me the MOT but still dumps fluid sometimes. I have a rebuilt rack ready to fit, when I run out of excuses.

I think Adrian is right Julian, these additives just swell the failing part,so short term fix.

Its £20 on e-bay to possibly get you out of trouble..

For £120 you get the re-con rack from LD parts and I'm sure someone close by will give you hand to fit it..

If it's just a rack seal leaking Julian by a repair kit from LD, about £20 and repair it, not difficult you just have to be careful and keep everything nice and clean.

Great minds think alike ! Yes, I'm hoping to try an LD parts seal kit Ian but, just like Chris, I need something quick for the MOT. And Sam, thanks for volunteering

                      Cheers

Julian i do have a pair of long nose right angle circlip pliers if you need them.
I brought them to renew seals on my brake master cylinder.

                          Julian,

I picked up a S/H rack for £25. Took it apart and when I was sure it was repairable ordered the kit.

This allowed me to change it at my leisure and I figured if it was beyond repair I had an exchange unit to swap for another whilst still keeping the car on the road.

                          Ian.

Thanks Glenn, if I need them I know where to come

And thanks Ian, good idea. I may well do that as it will help to minimise the time that the car's off the road

                            Cheers

Ok guys, I could do with some more help please

I pulled back my left hand rack gaiter and mopped up all the fluid that I know shouldn't be there. I then noticed the nylon bush (for sake of a better description) was floating round loose on the end of the rack. I managed to reseat it back into the rack housing but, on turning the steering, it's come out again.

I've studied the ROM but just don't quite understand how this is supposed to be retained. Can anybody enlighten me pleeease

                              Cheers
