    Yahoo account hacked

Some twerp from Brazil, with nothing better to do in life, has hacked my Yahoo account and sent out emails with my name (maiden surname 'Cornford') as the header. Please ignore them if you get one from me. I've since increased the security so hopefully that will be the end of it. B*****s.

Ok, I'll be more ladylike next time I post!

Tanya - more likely you've got infected by some malware rather than someone actively target and hack you (malware will often send itself to people in your contacts list). Try some up to date antivirus (http://windows.microsoft.com/en-gb/w...tials-download) and run a scan. Good luck.

Yes, that's sounds like it, thanks. A scan I did didn't show anything. I'll try again with updates.

Odd you should say that..... Was it a yahoo.ca account? My brothers yahoo.ca account started sending all sorts of rubbish end of last week, and now is trying to send viruses - he thought his computer had been directly hacked and has stopped using it meaning instead of skype yesterday it cost me an hour phone call to BC.....

I'll have to give him a call.... He's been using his ipod touch on Tim Hortons free wifi since the initial problem....

          Thanks for that

          Russ

I don't use Yahoo, but have had a similar problem just after got back from Holiday a few weeks ago.
Everyone in my "Incredimail" Address Book has been getting emails purporting to be from me, but which aren't, asking them to logon to some site or other.
I have "Avira" anti-virus running all the time on my laptop and it didn't pick anything up, and when I ran a full scan that too showed no malware.
I have a feeling it was some Website that I somehow got re-directed to that was the cause of it, but can't be sure.
As a Forum Moderator (not this Forum) I have noticed quite a few attempts by someone from Russia (.ru address) trying to get into the Website
I moderate on recently, and the Americans are pointing the finger at the Chinese re hacking into Government sites.
Also quoting from "Hill Street Blues" as the Seargeant said "Be carefull out there", good program that.

Hi all. Whatever AV software you use needs to be kept updated with latest definition sets. Malware is being produced by the thousand every day. Just buying AV and sticking it on your machine is not enough. Make sure you set it to install updates automatically. Also, make sure you have your Windows updates set to automatic. They're there for a reason!

In my experience no one program seems to pick up all spyware and trojans.
Personally run MS Security Essentials as anti virus, with Spyware Blaster, Super AntiSpyware, Spybot Search and Destroy and Malaware Bytes, (all free programs no connection etc.) and get them to do complete scans on a regular basis, because malware will still get through.

Yes Russ, it was a yahoo.ca account. Same thing as you Terry, sending emails 'from me' with some dastardly link in the email. I've installed Malwarebytes now, but it still didn't pick up anything. I'll do a longer scan on my laptop tonight. These things are sneaky.

Yes, a while ago. just looked on my server but I had deleted it. Just a blank email IIRC, at least 3 weeks ago.

                              Hi Tanya,

Its possible your password was stolen by malware but recently at work we have seen several accounts of customers hacked where they had simply used a password that was a dictionary word or a name and is too easy for automated programs (bots) to crack by slow and steady attempts using a dictionary.

At work we are now using a password with two unrelated words in plus a number and a "special" character (!£$%^&*()@# etc)

something like 79crumpled%stairs or crumpled79stairs% or any other format you can dream up. These are easy to memorise and incredibly secure compared to the usual single word and number style passwords.

                              Hope that helps

                              Kind regards
                              Ian
