    voltage irregular

Hi there, wondering if anyone can diagnose a wee problem that has surfaced. Couple of weeks ago on a wee shoot around the island, i saw that my voltmeter was showing the voltage off the scale, into the red. Usually it sits at 13+ volts, and is usually steady. It soon came down again to normal and i thought little of it, but kept an eye on it. However, it happened again next time out and is now happening more frequently. It's now happening every time i drive and appears to be getting worse. Should i be looking at the voltage regulator. any ideas welcome. cheers, Jools

Mine went up into the 15v + region when I was on a trip to Belgium. Luckily I made it back to the UK okay and assumed I'd be needing an exchange alternator

Staginhiding gave me an old bust alternator and I was pleasantly surprised at how easy it was to swap the voltage regulator and all's been well ever since.

    Cheers

Hi Julian, only fitted new Alternator 18 months ago. will get it checked though as i wouldn't know where to start in looking for other causes. Cheers Jools.

Check all the earth connections, too, including the strap from the engine block to chassis.

          Hi Jools,

Do you know what ? Mine was also about 18 months old as well

I couldn't be bothered going back to the supplier (one of the big ones) and when I got a free regulator to fit it was a convenient solution.

          Cheers

Mine did that when my battery was dying - the voltmeter read very high after starting then remained a little higher than normal. Usually, after a cold start, the needle returns to about 14v very quickly.

Hi Jools, the Mk2 has an all-in-one alternator, the Mk1 has a separate regulator, if you're not a dab hand at sparks, it's a new alternator I fear. Martin.

A year ago I'd have totally agreed with you however, having successfully and relatively simply changed mine on a Mk 2, I would, humbly, beg to differ Martin.

I'm ok with wiring diagrams etc but when it comes to any more intricate electrics I'm normally flummoxed but this was one job I managed easily.

                Cheers

Thanx for the replies fellas. I have replaced the old mk1 Alt with the Mk2 one with the inbuilt regulator. I intend to check all wires and earths before looking at the Alt. Julian, i agree with you, i reckon i could change the regulator. Where, however, can i find one. If it is the alt ,i may contact the supplier as i would expect to get more than 7000 miles in 18months before needing replaced. cheers jools.

                    Hi Jools,

Just Google it - this is one of the first I found.

                    Cheers

Hiya, the Mk2 should have the Lucas 18 ACR, but as with the Mk 1 1/2 I expect there'll be some overlap..
