Engine slow on turnover when starting

    Evening All

Today like a few times recently the stag is acting odd when I come to start it. When first starting the car, the engine will barely turn over on the starter for 20 or so seconds. It will then suddenly speed up and fire. It did it this morning after a 9 day stand in the garage during which the battery connected to a trickle charger. It did it again this evening when I wanted to get home from work. Upon arrival at home I came to restart it after investigating the loss of brake fluid and it started first turn of the key.

    Any suggestions?

    Regards

    Bruce

Check to see if the Throttle cable or choke cable is getting warm, you may have a poor engine earth connection.

My vote is also earths, or loose connections on the battery or starter itself.
Header tanks - you can't beat a bit of bling.

Bruce can you check your battery acid level,or is it a sealed battery.I had the same problem on my stag so time ago as the trickle chargers tend to dry out the battery after a peroid of time, its worth a check

I changed the starter on my sons car last weekend, it had the same symptoms, after it had been standing overnight it would be really slow to turn over as if battery was flat, I even bought a new battery for it, after it started it was fine all day. I discovered it was the starter when I found that holding the key in the starting position for several seconds that the starter would suddenly start spinning properly. I did get good at swapping the battery over, got it down to 4 minutes.Changed it every morning for nearly 3 weeks, I was convinced I had something discharging the battery.

                All

Those of you that stated it was the engine earth were correct To my shame, I discovered that during the resto I had overlooked to fit an earth to the engine. The battery was earthed to the body but not the engine itself. What I find strange is that the car has been running for two years quiet happily in this configuration. Anyway, yesterday I fitted a proper Stag earth braid which leads from the battery to the body and then onto the engine and she now cranks perfectly.

                Thanks all

Reading this post prompted me to check out my LDV Convoy, which had similar issues. I removed the earth to body strap, hit it with a big hammer at each crimped end, cleaned up the body metal and replaced the bolt - only to find that last turn of the bolt revealed a slightly stripped thread. New bolt, problem solved. Tres bien, merci beaucoup!
