Rear brakes again-maybe a new question?

Hi all, took my rear hubs apart and put the brakes in the correct (I think) orientation but I do have a question about the larger of the 2 cross tension springs (the ones at at the cylinder end of things).

Does anyone know what the twiddly bit of the spring is there to do? Drew asked the same question in the second page of this thread but I couldn't find an answer.http://www.stag.org.uk/forum/showthr...ht=Rear+brakes

I ask because when I took mine apart the springs in question had hooks on both ends and no 'twiddly bit' on either one. They did have the same profile as the ones shown in the ROM though. The only thing that comes to mind is to put some pressure on the adjusting mechanism, although why, I'm not sure.

Yes its to hold the adjuster against the brake shoe, as there is a little play on it

Thanks Vince in that case I assume it must fit behind the cross lever?

Yes your right it looks odd because the other end fits in the same hole as the handbrake return spring

Yes, I'm not in the garage so can't see if that makes sense. Do you mean just behind the adjuster?

I take it you are talking about the spring with the long bendy end lol.
It goes on the face of the shoe so to speak and when in place its above the handbrake lever and just above the handbrake return spring, if that make sence lol

don't forget the top spring goes behind the shoes
