    Anorak Stuff; Hood Levers

I have always assumed that all hoods were originally fitted with pointed tip chrome locking levers, and that all hard tops were fitted with rounded end levers. The hoods I have seen with rounded levers, I assumed were a wrong fitment.

I heard today that later hoods had the rounded levers. Has anyone else heard of this?

Not sure myself. I'll have a look in my anorak pocket and see what sort of levers I have in there.........

According to the chap who did my roof he reckons all Soft top hoods came with pointy ends, since this makes it much easier to locate the soft top into the windscreen frame.

That was obviously the original idea, but how do we know they didnt change it to the rounded levelrs?

BTW was that Brian or Jim, and how would they know that anyway?

That is the question. We now know that logic was never one of Triumph's best points!

Was the last question directed at me? If so, no, I got the roof done via a chap called Dave in Bulkington (and got him to smarten up my seats ). I only know this as I had to change both handles on my Stag (one of the bases broke off on one, whilst on another the base was weakening to such an extent that the screw holes started to form cracks). When I ordered a handle from Robsport it seemed that they had sent me a handle from a Hard Top (with a rounded end), which of course Dave threw back at me!

Ha thats a coincidence, thats exactly what started me on the topic. I dont suppose we will ever get a definitive answer.

I have had my anorak on this morning whilst checking some items in The Original Triumph Stag - The Restorers Guide and on page 28 it states: "The earliest handles have long pointed pins, but these were changed in approximately March 1971 because they could damage the chrome sockets on the windscreen header rail. The later type of chromed angle (which is actually harder to engage correctly) has a short, rounded engagement pin."

i would guess that there has been much exchange of soft tops, and/or frames, over the intervening years and there is now quite a mix of pointed and round handles across all ages of Stag.
