Fuel Guage sender unit - Removal

Before I break something and regret it, is there a top tip to remove the fuel guage sender unit. I see in the catalogue that it has a locking ring which presumably just twists off to reveal the sender? My unit appears to have 3 small lugs protruding. Are these part of the ring or the sender? My fuel guage suggests I have a 1/4 tank but when dipped there appears to be less than an inch. Doesn't sound right to me?

You usually have to knock the ring round with a hammer and screwdriver. Gentle taps applied all round the inner circumference, should free it.

You can see which way to go because there are convexities on the outside of the inner disc which fit into concavities on the outer ring (or is it the oter way round!!). Then the disc lifts out. Scrape away the old seal and replace with new stuff. Fitting is reverse.
I didn't use any sealant or anything - not sure about that one. It seems a very tight fit.
