    "Torque converter drain back"

While I had the old girl jacked up getting the inner tubes taken out of my tyres, (she was up on the jack at the front for about 8 days), when i went back in the garage and started refitting the wheels i could hear a dripping noise , then noticed the drip tray, it looked liked a blood bath and oil was still dripping. on further investigation, the oil was coming out of the top of the dip stick tube?.
Has anyone had a similar experience?.
The oil level is now low on the dip stick when checked ,after running down the road and back, but is above the high level now after standing for 12hrs.

You've got it, the TC has emptied into the sump while the front was elevated, it shouldn't happen but they all do it, don't worry. Martin.

Looks like my garage floor. I wasn't expecting quite a rush of red stuff when i changed the inhibitor switch the other week. Looked like I'd hit a bleeder during surgery. I'm surprised there is still oil in the gearbox, so much of it has soaked into the cardboard under the car and collected in the various potties.

As Martin has said, they all do it (BW35's) and don't have to be jacked up either.

I found that filled to the 'correct' level resulted in a discharge if left standing for a few days.
Eventually it found its normal level, and stopped discharging.
To be honest I haven't bothered checking the level since when warm, certainly when cold if you pull the dip stick its well over full...which is normal!

I had all that and worse with the 35 but since I have swapped for the 65 it does not loose a drop. After standing for a couple of days then level rises up the dipstik a bit but that's all. Graham

Had the same happen to me, the way to do it is run car up to temp drive to a level surface then what I do is remove the dipstick while car is still running clean it switch of the engine and within 30 seconds dip the stick you should be just at the lower fill line. There is a bulletin that says the same more or less.

              cheers Stuart

There is a check valve in the valve block that isn't playing the game and is allowing it to drain back. Whip the block out and give it a good clean and check...

Wasn't there also a copy of a BW service bulletin posted sometime ago saying something about it may be something to do with the orientation of the front pump when re-fitted.

                  Ian

I think this was it. Not the same problem though or is it related !

                  SUBJECT: Front Pump Oil Leak

A number of cases have been reported where the front pump assembly is replaced to correct an oil leak, when actually only the oil seal was effected.
Where complaints of this nature are encountered, it is recommended that the following action be taken.
                  1. Remove transmission.
                  2. Remove front pump assembly referring to Service Manual #139 part 4 (Front Pump Assembly) disassemble, noting carefully the position of the oil pump gears, so that on re-assemble they are returned to their correct location.
                  3. Be sure the convertor rear support bushing is in good condition and is not turning in the case.
                  4. Replace oil seal, part number 9102114 and pump body "O" ring part #9107128.
NOTE: After fitting oil seal, be sure that the oil drain hole located between the oil seal and convertor rear support bushing is clear, as this drain relieves excessive oil build up at the seal.
                  5. Re-fit pump assembly using new gaskets.
                  6. Road test to be sure of correct adjustment of the downshift cable and selector linkage as described in Service Manual 139. Check for oil leaks.

Thanks Russ, I knew that the level rises on these old boxes when inactive but did not expect the oil to come out of the top of the dip stick tube, probably made worse by the front being jacked up?, will have to have a look but could be a trip to see an expert at sometime. cheers for the info and input, cheers to you as well Ian and the rest of the boys. do like that Java green
