    Crazy prices for parts

Well the welding is done so now I,m surfing for parts. What a mine field

Front Wheel bearings range from £18 rimmers to eBay £10 no mention of any difference in quality
Rimmers list one nylon nut 138563 £12,74 somewhere else virtually the same nut with a different number is £3
I get the same problem whilst shopping for my business in the building trade.
I will enjoy the challenge knowing I,m saving money
Any tips would be very helpful

    Hi Edd
We use paddocks alot but we also use rimmers because they do a price check, if you email them with something from another supplier they will match it.

Yep, always lots of variety....... for the Wheel bearing try Peter at LD Part where you can shop with confidence http://www.ldparts.co.uk/shop/shop.p...product&pid=73 (no personal interest blah blah)

Use ebay too Edd. I know it sounds obvious but you dont have to use Triumph suppliers for nuts and bolts. I have bought steel sheet, paint, thinners, stainless nut and bolts, car parts bearings... not even from car part suppliers at extremely good prices. I have also avoided ebay when the prices are wrong and i mean too cheap as well as too high! My wheel bearings came from ebay at half the normal retail price. They came in sealed QH packets from an old guy who was moving his "accumulated" stock on. Rear Wheel cylinder kits came from a similar seller on ebay at a ridiculously low price in Lockheed boxes but my caliper kits came from the Brothers as i couldnt tell if the ones from Ebay were good quality brand items or not. They came in unmarked boxes so i was none the wiser as to the quality in the end!
I also have a cashback saver link that pays me cashback in very small amounts whenever I use ebay for parts!

Edd, also don't forget that you can purchase UNF / UNC nuts and bolts from tractor/agricultural outlets as the the likes of John Deer etc are still using these type of stuff. Quite often I nip into our local places for this type of thing at a fraction of the cost. You might think this is daft but it's true

buying the cheapest part does not necessarily mean that you are saving money. There are many reputable traders on the bay, numpty/Robsport, Tony Hart etc etc. But then there are also a load who sell bits that are seemingly made from butter. and probably sourced from the other side of the planet...

Having been bitten a few times buying the cheapest bit only to find it a shoddy remanufactured part and barely fit for purpose on the day it was fitted, I nowadays buy from a known supplier.

Some of the stuff on the bay is also fake, dirt cheap GKN UJ kits that might as well have been made from balsa wood anyone? one of them didn't even have the holes drilled through to allow grease to be pumped in. I didn't notice when fitting and predictably it seized up and disintegrated within a hundred miles. Waste of my time..

These days you really do get what you pay for i am afraid to say.

edited to add I often head for the nut and bolt trade stands at car shows / steam fairs and they often sell a kilo bag of UNF bolts, nuts and nylocs for a fair price.

Thanks everyone for the comments so far all really helpful i understand the concept buy cheap you'll buy twice however some items are just hard to get wrong and some are like for like.

Although this probably won't cause the Stag to fall apart, the comparison between the quality of these 5/16" lockwashers is astounding.

Both came from very reputable Stag suppliers. The really well finished smooth shiny one was considerably cheaper than the cheapo punched out one!

                      Cheers Glen thanks for that
I have worked on my reputation over the last twenty years being self employed and when you get recommended it really shows that you offer a good service.
I,m amazed at one supplier who seemed put out when I asked for help in counting the number of bolts needed to rebuild my diff. Ok I had a rough idea but I was looking for a answer something like ahh you'll need this and what about this ! In the end I told him and then silly me forgot the washers and seeing as I was feeling I had put this chap out with his manner I then forgot the output bearings. He could have sold me my next order which will be over £400
                      Funny drew mentions washers above
Maybe this shoud be moved to he rant thread
Have a wonderful Easter everyone happy staging if you get the chance

Remember those washers above from one of the major suppliers? Well, I was running low on good 5/16" washers this evening and thought I could use those cheapo ones on the bellhousing where they can't be seen. Think again, this is what happened before the nut got anywhere near being tight:

I found this stripping the inside of my engine on two of them. It was only a matter of time before they fell away and hence leaving the bolt to undo and leave bits of metal to get caught in the chains. Cause and effect.
