    Replacement coil

    I have I think a dud coil as when the car starts it stops after 1mili sec.
    Firstly to check coil I got a reading across primary of 1.4 ohms and open circuit between primary and secondary coils i reckon this should be in the region of 15ohms between pri and sec.

    I can't see coil lettering or make on the coil in car,i have lumentation electronic fitted it's mk 2.
    If the replacement coil resistance is the same as the duff coil is this a simple swap.
    I seen the Lucas dlb 110 seem suitable ,I think.
    Please tell me it's that simple!!!!!!!

    thats a 12volt sports coil ok if you not using a ballast mki or have bypassed the built in ballast wire on the mk 2

      Are you saying it starts and as soon as you let go of the key it stalls if so that's normally a fault with the coil feed on a ballast system. what happening is you are starting on the supply from the starter and when it reverts to the ballast supply it cant run be cause of the lack of it

      Worth checking the coil feed if you haven't done so yet

        I have a 12volt supply at coil .
        If the coil primary resistance is the same as the old coil will it be a straight swap.
        How do you check for ballast resistor in circuit ?
        Can this be determined from the fitted coil resistance as an indication of ballast resistor in circuit.

          If you have 12 volts at the coil all the time that would suggest you have a system that has had the ballast bypassed. it should only get the full 12v when starting and a lower voltage as a constant supply when running. Are you sure that the supply is not breaking down under load. Have you tried running a wire from the battery to the coil temporarily.

          Re what coil you need, you first need to confirm if it's running a ballast resistor or not (or there is a fault present). from what you say it isn't with 12v constantly at the coil. I also believe that certain electronic ignitions have specific coil requirements maybe someone else knows if that's the case with yours

          I would guess from what you say that it's been converted to run at 12v although the problem you describe still sounds to me as stated in my first post. I suppose another way to test that theory is pull the small wire off the starter and see what happens.

            If you dissconnect the - side of the coil and then run it to ground with the ign on you should get 6 volts approx

              Cheers guys,
              I have indeed got ballast fitted and a dud coil.
              A small tip turn over engine and if the voltage drops to 9volts or lower it's a good guide as having ballast fitted,
              A smaller drop will show ballast in circuit not bombproof but fairly reliable.
              I meant to say primary to secondary should be 15kohms I have open circuit.
