Had to take my Honda CR-V for its yearly test, and was not glad to hear it was the first day of the delayed new MOT regs - when he took the key out and checked the steering lock I must have looked at him a bit oddly.....

I asked how he was going to check the speedo, and he said he hoped it would register when he drove it round the yard - it reminded me that there might be a Stag failing the next MOT that featured in the promo video....

Thanks Russ for the heads up
Surely they can see the speedo working on the rolling road.

Not in the case of the crv - being 4 wheel drive they rotate the wheels in opposite directions so it doesn't wreck the centre diff and consequently doesn't move the speedo drive. As to the average car, there is no guarantee the rollers will run fast enough to move a slightly sticky speedo....

My 4x4 proves a little more amusing - especially on the brake test.
I know the guys who run the local garage very well, and they know that I want to know what is wrong, so that I can put it right.
The brake test could be a simple as a run down the road with some gadget in the passenger footwell.
Or - an even simpler - "Do the brakes work?"
If I'd know how good they would be after I had new discs made, I'd have done it sooner!

Something that you'll now have to worry about, allegedly, is fitted warning lights - a lot of cars have PDWA lights that don't, handbrake and main beam telltales that don't and they will now supposedly be failures - seat runners/adjusters, correct operation of door locks, and powerdoor locks according to an article in the Mail are supposed to be testable, but I didn't see them on his list of extras at the test station. One thing I think is a bit off is the electronic tyre pressure monitors fitted to some moderns have to work, regardless of whether the pressure is correct - that may fail quite a few ageing Renault Lagunas and saddle them with sizeable bills or force them to scrap otherwise reasonable cars because they are simply uneconomic to fix.

Good old EU.....its them behind this new tranche of old bollocks

A cynic might say those rules on stupid items like tyre pressure monitors having to work (even though they are not compulsory) is just an attempt by the government to get more slightly older cars scrapped and increase the sale of new cars which results in a new car tax and VAT injection into the exchequer. A stealth tax or what!

I was told last November when I took the bike to my mate for it's MOT that engine MIL lights will also be testable in that they shouldn't be on other than doing the self check

On the face of it, that would seem to be plain daft - unless it's to do with emissions and user detection of engine faults..

My bike has just failed on niose levels after 13years so now I have to make up baffels to quierten it down. I can't get across to them that was the way it was made I might as well try to explain it to a donkey. Plus the fact I wont be able to P**s the neighbours off any more I know some people never grow up

I think you'll find it's down to Emissions, DPF's, CRT's etc, as you say it's of no interest to them if you have a failed cam sensor or whatever.

                      Ian.

They have been a testable item on heavy vehicles that qualify for a (RPC) reduced pollution certificate for some years now, and if a related fault is stored in the ECU it is time stamped and cant be erased for 13 months. leaving VOSA a nice little audit trail if they need it.

Just put my Stag in for its test, which I am pleased to say it passed. According to the tester, the speedometer is only inspected for damage, such as broken glass, not to see if it actually works!! And the steering lock has to be in place and working. What has that got to do with safety? I can't be bothered to list the various other anomolies. I reckon the people who come up with such regulations live on another planet. Mike.

What is it they say about tempting fate

I took one of our cars for MOT today (the Freelander) got to the end of the road and up pops the engine management light (MIL light) put the code reader on it and it showed PO138 active, post cat 02 sensor fault. luckily it turned out to be a bad connection on the plug where it goes through in to the car.

All turned out well in the end and the Landy has a full ticket again
