Soldiered on, fitted the carbs. car fired up third attemp, managed to get the car to tick over at around 800 rpm and set the timing
Very happy, first fire up since I rebuilt the engine from a box of bits that was stripped down 23 years ago

Need a new exhaust as I deposited the contenets of the old silencer on the garage floor

Thanks to Alan and you other guys that for the pictures and help

Beware my Mk1 had the original carbs when I bought it, it was a nightmare to restart from hot due to not having the temperature compensator valves essentially you get an air lock in carb and sometimes you could wait up to an hour before it would restart. A chance conversation with Tony Hart revealed the problem he told me Mk1 carbs are a rarity as most have been replaced, which was what I did after our conversation.
      Cheers
