Snow damage.
I don't know what it's like in other parts of the country, but in Northants, all the pot holes, appear to be old repaired ones failing, where they have been cut out and tar sealed at the edges, there doesn't seem to be a problem, it makes me mad when I come across a council vehicle, and blokes tamping a shovel full of cold tar into pot holes, they'll fail at the next rainfall, I knows times is tough guvner, but we pay a lot for basic road upkeep, and we're not getting it ! Grrr !. Cheesed off of Brixworth.

i know what you mean Mart, we have a 'new road' here, no more than five years old, it's national speed limit, and you have to dodge the pot holes, then dodge all the loose tarmac thats comming away too, it disgusting with the road tax we pay, it has trundles too with the weight of the HGV's using it, it was put in to bypass a town and keep traffic out, and it's the main route to an industrial estate

This is the result of a pothole just north of Olney in Bucks a few weeks back.

I am chasing the council for the cost of the new wheel - but don't hold much hope. They have filled in the hole now too.

Oh Martin,
Don't get me started on this one again, my pet hate as much as Julian's weather forecasts!
A country road near me on a bend has approx 10 pot hole patches all next to each other albeit an inch apart, repaired twice in the last 2 years and need repairing yet again. They do not seal the edges with bitumen, hence they break up again at the seams.
If However they replaced all the patches with one new strip, there would be less 'edges' to break up and being on a bend creates danger as cars swerve around them to avoid them.
I really do believe this is a scam so the road repairs bring in a constant, regular wage to the contractors.
What annoys me more is that one person goes round to estimate, outlines the area to be repaired then nothing gets done until another person marks the area with a different colour, they eventually get repaired but it seems they are not checked for quality and the payment goes ahead, if the person checking the repairs did not authorise payment unless they are repaired correctly, that would stop a lot of the recurring problems and that person is on a wage so clearly not doing his job properly.
On tv last week, a road repair man was interviewed and he said it's the cold, BO**OCKS, in the summer they blame the heat, rain or ice in the winter, if they were repaired properly they would not fail.
Told you not to get me started, I think we may need to start a rant thread so anyone can have a moan about anything that is pi**ing them off.
Grumpy git 2.I only do what the voices in my wife’s head tell me to do!

As it happens, I don't reckon our roads around here are too bad for potholes- not good mind you, but certainly not big enough to bury weather forecasters unfortunately
Cheers
