Bright light for auto selector

Hi,

I really enjoyed taking my car out for long drives this weekend, my 1st chance with the top down. Anyway at night the light that illuminates the gear selector is really bright and seems to come through a gap between the arc shaped metal cover that moves with the gear stick and the plastic casing. I ended up driving with my left elbow raised a bit just to stop it glaring in my eye. Is there a seal or something like a brush (like I've seen on other selectors) that should prevent the light coming through this gap?

It is just the plastic cover wants adjusting to block the light

On mine the selector lamp and fag lighter lamp are wired in series, so they both glow dimly. Too dimly in fact. Not sure if this wiring is original or not.
I am experimenting with LED lamps for the selector, to give more light and less heat.

Thanks for the replies. What holds the cover in place? I don't have a workshop manual, is there one?
