Speedo Cable

Hi all.
A quick question. I have been fitting a new flasher relay today and while the dash was out I thought I would lubricate the speedo inner cable as the speedo needle is a bit jumpy. I noticed there is a stiff section about 8"-10" from the gearbox end (auto box) is this how they should be. I greased the cable and the speedo now seems a lot steadier.

i had the same problem, and did the same, it broke a few months later and i ended up replacing it, if you replace it now,before it breaks it will be a lot eaiser, just pull it out and feed a new one in

Like most of us do,buy a new speedo cable just in case the old one breaks, then add it to the things to do list

I would advance the train of thought that just changing the inner is a false economy. If you have resistance to turning down by the gearbox end, this is most likely because the outer has kinked, or started to, where it has to turn just after energing from the 'box.

Change inner and outer for peace of mind, tape up an old bike brake cable outer (stiff but bendy ooeer missus) to the gearbox end and draw it through to act as a pull guide for the new speedo outer.

Don't throw away the old inner. They are very useful for running wires, etc behind panels in cars, or even for the same job around the house.

Hi Robbo, didn't you just spend a decent amount on this car and isn't then reasonable to think that the dealer would sort these things out for you (assuming you found the problems on a test drive or shortly thereafter)?
