    Hi Matt
Interesting point you make that a £10.000 stag should be totally restored, that is poss if the guy who has done the work dosen't charge for his time.
Our stag cost £4,000 and the resto cost at least £8,000 in parts alone, so you wouldn't get ours for £10,000.
Stags on ebay held together with farmers baler twine are going for £1,500.

I take your point Vince but you should be able to get a good to excellent stag for 10k. Bear in mind a 10k Stag in excellent condition either has been very well looked after or has had a lot spent on it - as a buyer you want to buy one which the owner has spent lots on; as a seller you'll want to get your money back. To get a bargain stag ( or any other classic car or bike) you need to find one where the owner needs to sell. They are out there, you just need to be there when one comes up.

        Hi Matt
I agree £10.000 will get you a good one, not sure if it would be a total rebuild. But its a sign of the times that some people are having to sell cheap so you never know.
Have you any pics you can put on your profile so we can see what your upto lol

          Hi Vince
I'll open a new thread on my Stag in a week or so - just spent Friday and Saturday overhauling the brakes, diagnosing various electrical gremlins, refitting the retrimmed (new covers and foams) seats; and thinking about taking off the starter motor as that's knackered as well....
Mind you my engine and drive train all seems good; when I can get the starter motor to turn it over and it drives nicely and I've got it booked in to have the new hood fitted Monday week. The more I look closely at the body the more I see a reasonably respray over poor preparation....
Hey ho - at least its taxed and tested unlike my real project which is a 69 Lotus Plus 2S which is a good 2-3 years and don't tell SWMBO how many £££'s away from completion

To be honest I would not want one "close to how it left the factory" then you would be spending serious money putting it right

The cost mounts up fast! We bought our Stag for Can$12,000 (7,500 pounds range) and drove through the night to get it last June. We were pretty stupid about the whole buying thing. No research. We didn't arrange for a Brit classic car expert to be with us, didn't even take it for a test drive (how STUPID was that !). We pretty much bought it on the strength of the V8 burble!
As luck would have it, it's turned out to be not a bad car (totally rust-free), with a recently rebuilt engine. I've done a fair bit of work to improve thae car, granted some of it cosmetic and could be done much later. Last night, I totted up what I've spent so far and it amounted to at least $8,000 (5,000 pounds), and it still needs the auto box looked at yet! I could have upgraded our kitchen for that! But the car is going to be a stunner, especially fun as the locals here have no idea what type of car it is!
It's definately a labour of love!

Bloody hell Tanya ! That's brilliant - if we were both single I'd like to marry you There's no way in this world that my wife would agree to me spending money on the car before doing the kitchen

                      Cheers

Ha! It cost me an arm and a leg to upgrade our kitchen last year - don't know why it was fine after only 18 years! Now she can't complain about me spending money on the Stag. Problem is, with my other arm and leg spent on that, I won't be able to drive it.....................

That was a HUGE mistake Tanya and can lead to serious depression ! I've got detailed records of everything I've spent on the old girl in the last nine years, but I do not dare add it up ! Absolutely agree about it being a labour of love cos it's never going to be cost effective. If you decide against Julian, will you marry me ? he's better looking, but I'm more fun Martin.

I paid £6300 for my car in 2009 and it came with a bundle of receipts totaling £11,500 since 2003. I must have spent the thick end of £5000 on it in the last 4 years.

Too true but at least we have something to show for our hobby, unlike if our pastime was golf, or something like that
