I suspect he was just being honest - there are still honest people about! Has the car had an ID check by VOSA? if not then you might not get the V5 back until it has. The V5 will state on the front sheet that it is a Cat D. Also you do need to tell the insurance company when you insure the car - most aren't bothered but you should tell them.

So many cars, so little time!

its nice to see there are some honest people then,i didn't know if it is a legal requirement as it was a private sale.Originally posted by staginhiding View PostHe didnt need to tell you.If he is a Trader it is in his best interest to tell you.
It is still "Buyer beware" out there in the "private sale" car world

If you bought from a trader and they do not declare that it is a Cat D then you have grounds for a full refund due to misrepresentation by the seller.
If you bought from a private seller they are not obliged to tell you in the advertisement, you need to ask the question.
Either way, an HPI check answers the question for you.

AFAIK that is only for cars which require a VIC check, which tends to be CAT C cars. Most if not all CAT Ds will not show up on the logbook.Originally posted by marshman View PostI suspect he was just being honest - there are still honest people about! I still do not get the big deal with people being wary of CAT Ds. Early on in the car's life it is maybe of concern, but not once the car is getting on for almost a decade old IMO.Originally posted by staginhiding View PostHe didnt need to tell you.If he is a Trader it is in his best interest to tell you.

2 cars I know one chap of crashing (and repairing) without going through the insurance I would never wish to buy (One bent the front of the car but the bumper etc. bounced back (albeit with the car having a bent rad mount/ crossmember (which absorbs the impact), and then went off to bend the rear end of a Jag (wheel/arm/hub were all scrap)). None of them will ever come up as having been in an accident, and both would certainly have been CAT Ds.
Even I have fallen victim many moons ago to a bent car which was HPI clear (it did become a great parts car though (engine, interior etc.)).
