    CV Gaitor - non stag related

    Hi, has anyone tried the glueable split CV gaitors that you can buy, they have a tongue and groove seam that you can glue.

    Just been quoted approx £500 to supply and fit to my Golf from a main dealer.

    Anyone had any experience with the different types and makes that are out there, or are they a waste of time and just split when you turn a corner??

    Sounds expensive, but typical of VW main dealers. Much cheaper from an independent. Complete drive shafts are a lot cheaper nowadays, and readily available from the likes of eBay.

      Tried a glueable one years ago, complete waste of time. Try T.P.S. (Trade Parts Specialists) http://www.thetradepartsspecialists.co.uk who sell OE VAG parts at trade prices. Not sure where the nearest one to you is.

        Hi Tim, I've had some success with them, the biggest problem is that they have to be spotlessly clean, that includes the shaft, the joint and your hands, not easy when the joint's filled with CV grease, but it is possible. They're so cheap it might be worth a go. Martin.

          glue type gaitor might last long enough to get an m.o.t. but not much longer.

          Fit a real one (£10) yourself, or a new shaft. shouldn't be more than £80 for the complete shaft plus fitting (£100 if they're greedy)

          Unless your car is really unusual, the £500 price includes vw / german car industry subsidy.

              Pop down and see your local independent - they may have the kit to stretch a special CV boot over the joint from the hub end - they just disconnect the hub from the shaft, cut off the old one and stretch the new one over. The stretchy boots have a decent lifespan, and because of the minimal stripdown doesn't cost too much...

                I'm with Kryten on this one.

                On the front driveshafts of my 4x4 Stag, the shafts are so short - they articulate through quite large angles.
                Meaning that normal boots just keep popping off the joint - aided by the grease that just goes everywhere (and the moly grease is really, really slippery).
                So - 100% go along with the comment that it's hard to glue them - because you can't get rid of the grease.
                But the universal stretchy ones (I go to my local Unipart sockist - good stuff, usually cheap) go on easily - and seem to be pretty durable.

                That's what I'd do in your shoes.

                  Thanks Guy's some really valid comments, i think i knew the answer before i posted this thread, i will invest in a Haynes manual and do the job myself - just hate working on modern cars these days.

                    I have been using a company called drive shaft uk in Birmingham area. They turn around a job in about 3 days. Cost of new CVs on my Subaru were approx £130.00 inclu delivery. To change the boot I would have thought around £40.00. But you know its been done well and you have a receipt. Mike
