Will not go into park -not stag related

    HI Guys,
Wonder if anyone can help with a little problem we are having with a classic mini auto.
It drives fine in all gears , forward and backwards, but when we come to try and put it in park it just will not go in?
We have tried putting it into park when we have our foot on the brake, had the handbrake on, but it still will not go. Is it adjustment or is there some device to stop you putting it into park when you are going at speed? Any thoughts?

    regards

    Tony

Is it that the lever won't move or that park doesn't engage? If memory serves the 1000cc mini auto had no park, but if fitted with the 1275 it had the Metro box which had a pawl that located on the outside of the forward clutch, which is inside the governer housing at the rad end. This pawl is sprung, so if the spring breaks it won't go in (engagement is sprung but disengagement is positive)

I have rebuilt in excess of 100 of these AP autos, and although a simple box is full of pitfalls for the unwary...don't whatever you do remove the governer housing to check as the forward clutch will come flying out, and you''ll never get it back in!

Thanks for the reply Russ, yes it is fitted with the 1275 engine and is a 1995 model and the lever will not move it into park, but I can force it in.

This sounds like the cable has something wrong with it - commonly the cable guide bracket on the subframe would fail, and the cable fall onto the exhaust, with all sorts of consequences for selection.

There is a small black cover at the converter end underneath the low pressure valve, held on by 2 1/2"AF bolts that the cable goes into, remove the cover, and take the pin out of the cable hasp where it goes into the bellcrank. Move the bellcrank through the complete movement, counting the clicks to make sure all the gears select, including park, easily. If they do, you have a cable issue, if not, it could be internal..

Just a thought, you may have to unscrew the hasp/shackle from the cable to allow the bellcrank to clear when checking movement. The bellcrank engages onto a shaft with 2 washers and a 7/16 nut - this shaft screws directly into the valve block selector valve, and occasionally can come unscrewed a bit throwing selection off - LIGHTLY nip it up with a spanner if loose - don't go all king Kong onit as it is a taper at the valve end with a thread you can snap off....
