    hard top

on my brothers car when it rains heavy ( like all the time)he is getting wet carpets, when you look at the hard top by the B-post there is a small gap at the top,

would it be the hard top side rubber needs replacing ,where is best to buy from

    Hi Dave

My guess is the water is coming in along the top of the windscreen. At least that is where it was coming in on the hardtop I borrowed over the winter. The rubber seal had shrunk. Paddocks sell the various replacement seals.

    Regards

Water comes in on mine at the bottom corners of the windscreen, you don't usually see it running because it is hidden by the dashboard

Hi Dave, the front hard top seal, and the side seals are all one piece, Swarfega / Fairy Liquid and a small blunt screwdriver make fitting easier. Wards have them, £17 + vat. Martin.

Not wishing to tramp on Martin's toes but Yes. The ones you can buy today are not quite like the originals which actually had the rubber stitched to help them hold their shape and if you're fitting a new one it's worth originally applying masking tape to help the seal form a shape where it 'squidges' forward to seal properly.

In fact, the front seal is, perhaps surprisingly, the same as the rear seal of the hardtop - that sits around the bottom of the rear window and on the tops of the wings. Part number 629583.

Also, around the brass connector for the HRS there should be a small rectangle of soft foam that seals against the top of the B post. These can harden and lose their seal.

Having said this, I've got numerous gaps on mine but they're not the source of water getting into the car.

                Cheers

                  Julian

this water getting in has only come up since we have turned the car round while recovering the seats, you can see day light just where the HRS connector is,can you buy that small foam, and the seal along the door near the B -post is bent

you say you don't think its coming in from the hard top, but if as said earlier its coming in by the windscreen only the front carpet would can wet wouldn't it ?

                  thanks for any help dave

Unfortunately, as I know only too well from many years with BL products (& to be fair, Austin Morris were far worse than Rover Triumph) there is often no simple answer to many water leaks. And where a leak shows itself is often a long way from the point of ingress.

When I got my car there were about 26 different sources of water ingress and I have had to very slowly work my way round to sort them.

I usually suggest stripping out as much as possible - front seats are four bolts each and rear seat base and main carpets just lift out (10 minutes work max) and then get someone to spray water on the car from all angles and at different pressures until you see where it's coming in. Lift up the sill carpets as well if you can (just one more reason why I don't glue mine in place)

Obviously, it will come in where you can see daylight but, bizzarely, those places are often not where it comes in when you're driving

As for the B pillar foams, I think they're available but I reckon it would be easier and far cheaper to just make ones up.

                    Good luck.

                    Cheers

                    Julian

Ps Just a couple of further thoughts:
                    1) Did this start happening after you, or your brother, had done something ? Maybe disturbed a component ?
                    2) Very often it's a very small leak that causes problems and, when you eventually find it, it's dead simple to solve

So does mine, water from the screen leak runs along the floor pan and floods the rear.

I recall searching for water ingress in a roof space and it turned out the water was coming in on the far side of the house and running along a joist that had a slight run and dropped onto the ceiling 7metres from the leak.

                            thanks again dave
