The answer you don't want to the question you'd rather not ask
Answer....yes mate
Question... So does that mean the head gasket has gone then?
So much for enjoying the car during the summer
Let battle commence!

Living in Chester gives you a choice of options.
A) There are a number of Stag owners who live in and around Chester area that I am sure would only be happy to give you advice if decide to tackle the job yourself.
B) Michael Alexander are based in Saltney, Chester and are Triumph experts whom I am sure would give you a fair quote for doing the job.
C) I am in Chester from 30th of April to 8th of May and have done 3 Head Gasket changes on my Stag during the 20 years I've had it - and no comments please that I should have got it right the 1st time.

I'm only down the road in Shrewsbury and happy to pop up one Sat or Sun to offer help, advice, encouragement.
If you decide to change the timing chain, I've got some tensioners and a Tony Hart video you are welcome to.
Don't despair. Just get the job done before the sun arrives!

Thanks gents, I'm trying a ploy I've used on other cars with some success and so far I've got 3 bolts free and one stud. Two studs are resisting and two I've not touched yet.
Steve, I'm hoping to do as little as possible but as much as necessary. So if there's no sign of a problem with the chains then I'll leave them alone thanks. Help advice and encouragement very welcome though. I'm half hoping to have the studs out in a couple of evenings (but I'm not expecting to do so) and then hopefully things should be plain sailing.
Paddocks is not far from me so I can get a head set on my way home from work later in the week. But which type to get?, any recommendations?
Mark, yes I've seen your pictures and agree my worries are not as bad as yours. But you can address yours over next winter and I need mine done quickly so I can get the stag back in the lockup!

Get thick Payen Gaskets from Paddocks if they still have them - did the job for me and have lasted a number of years.
Damn, it was the head gaskets then. When I had HGF, I found the job pretty straightforward once I had got the studs out. Make sure you use Payen quality gaskets and I also used the zinc (I think!) plated studs - time will tell if they come out any easier!!
I Don't know how far your dismantling has got, but if you can run the engine up to temperature and then try it might help. (It will still run with a few studs missing!)
Disaster has struck! My cunning plan was keep as much of the engine intact as possible, run it up to temp and try to remove the studs with paddocks stud extractor.
Just managed to snap stud number two flush with the head. One is free, three four and five still solid.
I'd say that's it now! Stuffed!
Really really fed up, just got it looking how I wanted and now this.
Sell it as is?, sorn it?, break it? One thing I'm certain of I'm not spending £2500 on a replacement engine.
