    Crankshaft Bolt

I was checking under the car yesterday I can see where the bolt has just touched the radiator but i still have a gap I replaced the engine mounts a few years ago and the car does not have that many miles on them. The bolt is tight but I will recheck it again. Can the engine move or surge forward to where it could hit the radiator. I have a Mk1 with a Mk2 fan fitted its hard to get a picture but I will give it a try, any thoughts on the subject??

    cheers Stuart

    Hi Stuart,

My gap is only about 2mm I guess if the mounts do go soft and under really hard braking it might just touch but it's been like that for about 7000 miles without a problem (apart from when I've got to change the alternator belt ).

Besides, there's guite a bit of depth to the fins before anything touches the core.

If your engine mountings are ok, I wouldn't worry too much.

    Cheers

    Julian

Hi Stuart, is there a gap between the front top edge of the rad, and the top panel ? If there is, the top mounting brackets on the rad are too long, not uncommon on aftermarket radiators. Martin.

There seems a lot of variation, I can get a ring spanner on the crank pulley nut, I think mine is a standard rad.

I can also remove the transfer housings, compared mine with Bob's and his is closer to the bulkhead.

Suppose it depends which side of the tabs on the body the mounts are bolted to, would make a few mm difference.

I wouldn't say I have a lot of space either Stuart, but it looks like the engine would have to really surge forward to hit the radiator.

Thanks for the input, John that looks about the same as mine,Martin the radiator is original Mk 1 so no change there.Julian the mounts were replaced about a few years ago then the car sat while I finished other repairs and checks I know the quality of rubber these days is not what it was but they do not look any different.
John,Suppose it depends which side of the tabs on the body the mounts are bolted to, would make a few mm difference. i will need to look at that I seem to remember that there was a tapped hole in the block but that would be to much. I did notice that when sitting at the light in drive foot on brake that if you rev it up the front end will lift a bit so it might be that the mounts will let the engine move forward a bit. I think its going to be fine the fins are just kissed so a careful once over this week end then back to driving it. Thanks for the advice. Coming up for 50,000 miles a short canyon run should do it.

            cheers Stuart

The mount tabs are on the front of the chassis.
