I will have spent over 14 thousand by may bank holiday, but the car was insured for 3.5
My question is, should I tell my insurer about the work done?

The insurers should definately be told and an increased valuation applied for. You will be really sick if the worse happens and they only pay out 3.5K

The valuation increase will not be as much as you spend though, I bought mine for 5.75 and spent another 5 in parts alone (doing all the work myself) and it is now valued at 8.5

The sheaf of annual valuations that came with the car were all between 10 and 12K which quite frankly were cloud cookoo land compared to its real value.
