    Important National Day Question

    Just got my new insurance documents through and have just read this in the policy booklet.

    I am correct in thinking this is still an operational / working airfield, isn't it

    Has the club got anything in place as I read it there has got to be clear segregation between us and what goes on there.

    General Exceptions;

    5, Using your car on airfields.

    We will not pay any claim for events that happen while your car is parked or is being driven in any area of an airport or airfield used for;
    • moving,taking off or landing aircraft;
    • parking aircraft or other ground equipment, and for maintaining and refueling; or

    • customs inspections at passenger terminals.

    It also say's the same sort of thing for race tracks either pre-paid or not (Brands Hatch?)

    Just a thought.

        If an English Electric Lightning, or a Vulcan landed on mine, I'd be tempted to say "fair enough - at least it was stylish"

          At, I think Cranford, I've seen six of these parked in a row, and they all belong to the same bloke. Sadly, because of the avionics they'll never fly, but one is certified to taxi. What a sight ! Martin.

            Martin.
            If you think the lighting is fast have a look at this and concentrate at 2min20 secs!!! ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GXdJxjvQZW4 )
            I can remember when I was "no but lad" helping my dad do the collecting and counting for the RAFA wings appeal, they used to produce a special magazine and this year in particular there was an article on the TSR2.... Wow to a lad of 10 this was something else I used to take it to bed with me to read and re read what a shame it never went into service I under stand it spent its life at Boscombe Down being bounced on its under carriage until it broke then it was scrapped. There is still the shell of one at Duxford.

            Sorry went off topic cant help it hope you enjoy the video.

            Paul.

              Hi Paul, that's quite moving, the last time I saw it at Duxford, I just stood and stared - bloody politicians ! !

                Martin.
                Not only was the aircraft so far advanced but the electronics on board were just incredible for the time, even today it would still have been viable.
                I understand that much of the project is still under lock and key....well the stuff they didn't burn.
                So did the politicians really save money by getting rid of it?
                I don't think so.

                I could go into a rant at this point but I'm not.

                Paul.

                  If you're in to the TSR2, take a look at this - it's the first of 5 parts so total running time is nearly an hour. The clip that Paul mentioned earlier is taken from this.

                  Riveting, but very saddening, viewing.

                  Cheers

                    TSR2 being scrapped had more to do with being pushed into buying inferior US aircraft for political reasons than costs, and the bizarre belief that manned aircraft were outdated and should be replaced by ballistic missiles. We only got the Lightning by luck and private development by English Electric.

                    Scrapping of TSR2 and destruction of manufacturing jigs was nothing short of criminal.

                      Ian, to go back to your original question, yes it is an operational airfield. I live up the road from it and there are a few private aircraft flying from it from time to time and they are stored and maintained there as well.
                      Apologies to everyone else for hi jacking your discussion on the halcyon days of fighter aircraft.

                        Thanks John,

                        I should imagine Andrew will post a response about it.

                          If he didn't get bored reading about old aircraft - sorry for the hijack Ian.

                            Actually, the discussion on aircraft was interesting and informing.
                            I know very little about them apart from the fact that most of the decent ones still serve gin on board.

                              Hi Ian

                              Good question. Yes, it is an active airfield by with light aircraft.

                              This clause does not apply to the Club Scheme so cant answer for another insurer. So if you are with RH, there are no issues

                              What I can tell you Ian is that there is a 60 foot margin imposed by the airfield management for safety and we are no on the landing path but parallel to the run way.

                              Hope this helps and puts your mind at rest

                              Cheers
                              Andrew
