    BW35 gear box storage

    Dear all,

recently I had my BW35 gearbox rebuilt. When it came back I thought I would be able to turn the main shaft by hand from time to time - as I do with my spare manual TR6 gear box in my garage. But I found out that I am not able to turn the shaft on the BW35 by hand.

The gearbox is without oil at the moment.

As I hope I will not need the spare BW35 in the near future I wonder what is the best way to store it safely.

What can you recommend: Fill it up completely with hydraulic oil (Castrol ATF2) or only two litres? How can I turn the shaft?

Any help is highly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

    Kind regards,
    Dieter - from Germany.

Have you taken it out of park? I'm assuming you are talking about the tailshaft which may well be stiff but not impossible to turn but should ideally be done with the propshaft. If you are talking about the front end, then the outer set of splines are fixed for the converter stator so won't move either.

Storage is best done with converter installed and retained by a strip of metal (or an old combination spanner) bolted to the bellhousing in such a way as it doesn't put pressure on the converter but holds it engaged. The rear end could be plugged with the propshaft, or wrapped well with cling film (food wrap) to exclude dirt. Same applies to the dipstick tube and breather stub.

A couple of litres of fluid is a good idea, and turning the transmission on its sides periodically will coat the internals with fluid to keep things wet.

      Hello,

Would you recommend to fill in about two litres of oil just to prevent corrossion?

      Best wishes,
      Dieter.

You do like to get into trouble Graham! I'm doing battle with the company payroll checking over a thousand employees records for accuracy thanks to the HMRCs latest jolly wheeze, called RTI.

I have to submit an online "alignment submission" to HMRC before I can do this months payroll, and as I am off to Hungary on sunday lunchtime, it means I have to get it done today....

I digress, Dieter. Yes, just a couple of litres as the converter won't fill until it is run up - unless you really want to turn the converter by hand for ages to get the front pump to pull the fluid up - and I'm sure you don't. ..

            Hello Russ and Graham,

Your advice is highly appreciated - as always.

Seeing the weather forecast for the weekend I am getting very envious of Graham. I had planned to go to the "Jim Clark Memorial Race" on Hockenheimring and take part in that attempt to get 1000 classic cars onto the Hockenheimring at one certain time in order to break a "Guiness Book" record (see here: http://www.hockenheimring.net/news/w...nheim-historic).
If the will be as bad as forecasted, I might think twice...

            Have a nice weekend,
            Dieter - from Germany.
