And the French drivers are very courteous to classic cars...even the English ones! I'm off to France in mine in a couple of months, with another Stag for company...
This post has brought back fond memories of my very first foreign holidays. First trip abroad for me though wasn't in a car, but on a “Blue Cars” coach that went to Tossa De Mar on the Costa Brava and back (before the advent of package holidays using charter flights). Following year went back to the Costa Brava when I hired a new Ford Corsair and drove it to Lloret De Mar with 3 mates. Year after bought 2nd hand Austin A40 and drove that to Lloret De Mar as well (again with 3 mates). The Sunbeam Rapier that followed the A40 I went on camping holidays with to France, Belgium, and Holland with two workmates. No more taking cars abroad till bought the Stag which went on a proving run to Jersey and back before emigrating in it to Tenerife. In the old days never thought twice about jumping in the car and driving it across the Channel for a short weekend break and just throwing a Tent in the boot to use to sleep in, and used to get loads of Pesetas to the £ then.
Of course getting married changed all that.
I did 1200 miles round southern Ireland in a week, used no oil, water and averaged 29mpg 4 up and dragging the now infamous Krypod. The only thing that broke was the bulb for the handbrake in the cluster - never bothered fixing it because the big pdwa light does the same job!
Go for it Wilf, there is nothing like touring in a Stag!
Been to Le Mans twice in my Stag, 1300 miles in 4 days last year. Planning a big trip to the south of France this year, with wife and kids, should be interesting!!!
I'm off to Spa Francorchamps in my Stag in just over a month.
Going via Compiegne to see where the Armistice was signed, then the next day to the old Geux Reims racing circuit, then up to Luxembourg (for no particular reason, just to say that we've been there) then up to the Spa Classic.
Can't come quick enough.
Last year went to Classic le Mans in the TR, the previous year toured around the WW1 battlefields in Flanders also in the TR.
We've had many trips to France in the last 15 years, sadly none of them in a classic! However, having just bought a house in Normandy, I can see quite a few trips coming up, in all the classics, from the Stag 'down' to my 1949 Series 1 LandRover!
Cheers,
Mike.
Mine since 1987. Finished a 20+ year rebuild in 2012. One of many Triumphs and a 1949 LandRover!
You just can't beat touring the South of France in a Stag. When mine was on the road I made 2 summer trips back in the 80's. First time, once we were past Paris and heading south on the A6 the sun was beaming so the top came down and don't think I put it back up for 3 weeks ! Sadly I had to limp home with a suspected blown head gasket. Some years later, with the confidence of a recon engine, I made a second trip. I met up with a colleague of mine whose father lived in Nice and needed his ski boat taken down to the landing jetty/slipway. Luckily I had a tow bar on my Stag so we had loan of the boat for the day as a return of favour. The Stag never failed to turn heads.
Best part was following the roads that made the course of the Monaco F1 GP. Just listening to the V8 burble in the tunnel with the top down was like sweet music. An unforgettable experience. Bon Voyage ! img005.jpg
That's quite magical Martin, even on the wrong side of the road, France is wonderful ! Did you notice how the roads seem to be empty ?
cheers martin,No pot holes as well , not like the B2028 near lindfield ,That is Dangerous !, we came back on the M23 and M25, what a nightmere the M25 is.
Anyway see this bar in one village, didn't enter to soft.
166.jpg also didn't have to use the most important emergency tool while out and about.217.jpg
