New oil cooler adapteris leaker between it and the block.Non oil cooler version did n

I had fitted a spin-on oil filter adapter to my 73 Stag,no problem worked well.As here in Canada it can get realy hot in the summer decided to purchase from Rimmers the engine oil cooler kit.Mocal does not give a cooler specific diagram, but fitted a new O ring into the engine block, smaller O ring in the centre of the sandwich plate, noted the larger oil seal already fitted to the sandwich plate and bolted all on.Turned the engine over and oil leaked out from between the engine and the top of the sandwich plate.

Removed and refitted the old oil seal and same again.

What am I doing wrong, any help would be greatly appreciated.?

The O ring in the engine block is square section, is it this one that is leaking?? I had this problem and you need to make sure that the groove in the block is clean I sealed this O ring in with a sealer (called Right Stuff ) recommended. Be careful not to overtighten the centre bolt as they are drilled and are not very strong. Tightening the filter canniser actually tighten's the outer body onto the O ring in the block. This is one of the reasons I fitted so that when the filter is replaced it holds the outer section in place. Hope this helps. Graham

Thanks Graham,so if I read this correctly there are infact THREE seals, one in the engine block one built into the oil cooler sandwich plate plus the small O ring that surrounds where the the screw in adapter screws in. Am I correct?

      Thanks

As I rember 3 I cant find the fitting instructions at the moment But as I recall 1 in the block (where the original filter bowl fits ) 1 that sits in the filter head and 1 on the filter canister itself. There's one on Ebay at the moment and thats showing 2in the kit and 1 on the filter. Graham

Back in my days of Dolly Sprints, the oil cooler take off and return was a replacement transfer housing that also worked for 1850s, TR7s and Stags.... worked really well - I take it they are no longer made?

Best place to look is "Think Automotive". Biggest Mocal stockist I know.

Found this page which contains pictures of the Mocal unit being fitted to a car, have found Right Stuff here and will retry all again tomorrow, now that I know that there are 3 O rings, one in the block, one built ito the sandwich plate and the one on top of the filter cannister.
Thanks to all that answered my request for help.

I have the spin-on filter adapter on my Stag and when the car was first re-commissioned last summer, (after a 20+ rebuild!), I used to get small oil leaks when the engine was cold and even then only for a few minutes.

After some grovelling, I saw some oil coming from the joint between adapter and block. When I removed the filter to have a look, the special bolt holding the adaper onto the block was barely finger tight! The gentle application of a spanner nipped that up and now I have no more leaks. Well, not from there anyway!

Mine sounds just like what you are describing. 1 square section seal to seal the adapter to the block. A second seal to separate the oil flow and return paths again between the adapter and block and the third seal which is part of the oil filter itself.

                  Cheers,
                  Mike.
Mine since 1987. Finished a 20+ year rebuild in 2012. One of many Triumphs and a 1949 LandRover!
