First of many - water pump removal

Started the process of swapping engines and I'm removing components from one engine and fitting them on to the other. Small problem that can wait but it's not going away.... How to get the water pump out of the housing.

I've shifted the pump cover and removed the left hand thread thread bolt. But the pump still refuses to come out. I've a gentle slide puller that I've used with the bolt attached and tried to gently tap it out but it still won't shift. Does it need a considerable force, is there another method or am I missing something?

There will be more I'm sure but thanks for the help so far

The official tool is a slide hammer with a left hand threaded bolt so if you can get your slide puller attached to the bolt then you're doing it right.

They can be pretty stiff - there are two rubber seals around the brass cage. If you can't borrow the proper tool, I'd carry on doing what it sounds like you're doing but make sure you don't strip the threads on that left handed bolt.

    Cheers

The solution to many a problem.
Because even if it doesn't work - it can still be satisfying taking it out on whatever the offending object is

I am pretty sure that if you put the bolt back in screwing it anti clockwise you will be able by continuing to turn release the pump from it's housing - I'll check in the morning as I have mine out already so can say for def'

            Gary.
Try using a mother-in-law hair dryer (paint stripper ) and warming it up around the casting this may well help.

The pump usually comes out pretty easily but leaves the cage behind. It kinda skews out as it comes off the jackshaft splines..
Dont be tempted to try to pry it out as it can damage the block.
You need to use a puller or make one as some on here have..

Well I wonder how you know that Sam (and for the sake of others, Sam was the victim and not the perpretator of this sin )

I thought that's what Gary says he's done? : "I've a gentle slide puller that I've used with the bolt attached"

If your cage gets left in, give me a shout and I'll pop my cage extractor in the post Gary....

Hmmm, think I'm missing something. Even with repeated pulls of the slide hammer it still won't come out. I can feel a Little rotary play but nothing up and down. and tapping the vanes with a brass drift does nothing either

                      Any ideas gents?

I'm post about the exhaust elsewhere

Forgot its a six vane pump in a 76 car, is that correct? And does it make any difference, I'm not certain but I think the cover is the 12 vane type is that possible?

Also what is the purpose of the left hand thread bolt? Is it only there for removal?

It sounds like you have a stuck water pump but you cannot have a 6 vane unit with a 12 vane cover - won't fit.
I would suggest you get a new pump (Paddocks £65 +/-) you'd need to re-build whatever you take out in any case so don't waste any more time on it.
                          Good luck with the rest..

                          Cheers,

Dont do that! The bolt is made out of butter, sheer that off and you will find pump removal difficult and then have to go to the expense of replacing the pump shaft as well.

Fair point Richard, mine came out easily but like I say, best to leave this one and replace with a new unit I think.........
