    Tax exemption

Which part of a car is the bit that counts as the cars identity in terms of road tax? Is the bodyshell, the engine, or the complete assembly or just the ID plate?

Seeing this advert on ebay made me think 320263512238

Thesellerstates that he that he has disposed of the rotten bodyshell by chopping it up but then goes onto to mention the V5 form being SORNed and is even advertising the pile of bits as being tax exempt.

    Wondering

      Hi

I wasn't interested the pile of bits. The tax exemption description simply aroused my curiosity.

My car is already tax exempt.

        Hi Bruce,

It is the commission number. The last TE Stag is LD21086.

I have just been advised ofa Ford V6 engined Stag for sale locally (described as very good with few owners, etc)which was registeredMarch '73 but just misses out on TE as it is LD21923. This one must have gone from 'built to sold' very quickly as they usually hung around for a few months.

(Details are on the 'For Sale' section.

Strangely, the eBay item you mention was listed around the time a certain Stag s/h parts supplier was getting a bit of stick on here. Crossed my mind that what the vendor of this pile of scrap and a SORN'd V5 is doing is a bit more risquee than pulling an item just before it finishes because it didn't reach what he wanted.

I think the tax exemption works on a points system. So original body shell, engine, running gear, etc. So in effect if you was to buy a write off Mondeo/ Vectra and stick a tax exempt Stag body shell on it then it would not be tax exempt .

Or even if you were to do the same with a post 72 Stag you may encounter problems. That is if you were to tell !!!

            Simon,

The points system comes into effect if you are building a kitcar and want toacquire an age-related plate or retain the registration of the main donor carand not end up with a Q-plate. As you say, so many points for the body, engine, etc.

If the bulk of the identity is pre-1973, then it could well be tax exempt.

Sticking a tax exempt identity on a post-'72 car would be relatively easy to get away with, as long as you kept it quiet and could be certain no-one would shop you. I am sure it has been done many times, but not by anyone on here. We are all far too honest:?. Must confess, it crossed my mind when I was deciding what to do with my previous, damaged, tax-exempt Stag. But the penalties if caught far outweigh the cost of a few year's road tax.

This subject was discussed quite a few times on various Land Rover forums. The idea of a tax exempt coil sprung Series 2/Defender is quite attractive, but the point system gets in the way if a DOT inspection is required. Not only that the amount of stolen parts available makes it a dangerous game.

A mate of mine nearly got caught with exactly this. Basically an old Series 2/2a chassis with Defender coil springs/ body, engine and all the parts. It was tax exempt at the time of sale, but with the new more stringent MOT how long before a jobsworth tester notices it isnt what it is supposed to be ?
