Click Click Click (fuel pump)

This may seem like a strange question, but I will ask anyway..... my fuel pump ticks or clicks to fill up the float bowls in the carbs and the filter after a few days in the garage, but doesn't ever seem to stop. It runs fast to fill them up and the clicks away ever second or so afterwards, when not started. The fuel is not running over the ground anywhere or leaking?? On my last old car (MG Magnette, same fuel pump arrangement) the clicking would stop when the carbs filled up and then if not started immediately about every 30 seconds to keep pressure up.
My thoughts are the pump is getting weak, although runs ok when started and no fuel starvation issues...
Any ideas and no John, I don't want to convert to fuel injection!!!!

Sounds like a dodgy valve in the pump to me, leaking the pressure back, but it could well keep working like that for years

sounds like the pump is getting weak, I replaced mine for the same reason and the problem went away.

I'd go with a weak pump as well.

Some aftermarket pumps I have seen however continue to tick away at the a constant (high) rate, but the ticking simply becomes much quieter.

I built electronic Mitsuba pumps both into my Stag and my TR6. In both cars I have the same symptoms: quick click turning to slow click - without really stopping when the carb bowls (HS6 and HIF6) are filled up ....

My Facet pumps (I tried 2 in case i was a fault) do the same as far as I can tell but AFAIK the SU should stop ticking.
