    Another close shave

Having got ready for a nice drive out I left the Stag ticking over whilst a got a few things from in doors. Went back out to a strong smell of petrol, lifted the bonnet and centre V full of the stuff. Tried the usual things but fuel continues to drip from the bottom of the drivers side carb. This is the second time this has happened and I have managed to turn off before the fuel ignites so i am not taking any more chances. Question is do I have a go at reconditioning myself or just contact Alan and get a set already done? Either way I will have to get someone to fit and tune as I have never done anything on carbs before and it all looks a bit tricky!

Its likely to just be the needle valve sticking, try tapping the lower part of the carb (not too hard )and see if it stops..
Its probably better to have them out and renew at least the needle valves..
It really depends if they have had an overhaul in the past as to if you have them reconditioned or not..

It could be the plugs at the bottom of the float bowl! Fit a new o ring on those if you take the carbs off

          Hi Sam,
Have tried tapping the carb and re-starting a few times but I can still see fuel dripping off the screw heads at the bottom. I cant see where its actually coming out the carb. Not sure when or if carbs have been refurbed before hence why i am thinking of getting some already done.

I had loads of issues with mine Faversham tried to sort them a couple of times but come MOT time no way they would go through emissions. Admitted defeat in the end and exchanged them Alan, got him to fit them and the car has run much better since have had to MOT yet though.

Alan spotted at least three things wrong with mine when he examined them

Steve, there is an 'O' ring that fits under the float chamber underneath and they can becoem loose with age. If your float valve is not cutting off, then fuel would escape higher up and not from where you are seeing it. Its either the O ring underneath or the float chamber gasket. Cheap fix just a smelly job. If its a lot of fuel I would say its the O ring and a very quick fix

Agree with Steve if its just coming from that low down, however make sure its not running down the carb from higher up.
Also if you have the overflow in place it would be running out of that pipe down to the ground if it was just the needle valve..

Cheers for the replies chaps. The overflow pipe is connected but its not coming out of this and nothing is on the floor. It does seem to be coming from the square lower gaskit. If i attempt to repair myself first, can it be done with the carbs insitu or do I need to remove them and if I get a service kit will the cheaper non zenith kit be ok or is it better to get the genuine parts at twice the price?

                  Thanks, Steve

please use genuine spares, cheap alternatives are not worth it

check to see if the vent valve on the side of the carburetor is shutting off correctly to the overflow position ,this diverts the fuel vents to the overflow pipe
fuel can overflow from the chokes, temp compensator s,and from the main jet area, unusual for the gasket to just be leaking unless the screws are loose
yes the o ring on the plug also leaks if old and perished,

quite happy to supply, fit and tune carbs if you have a need ,or phone me for further advise
