    Noise from the rear

Hi all, I'd be very grateful if anyone can help me with identifying a problem that I have developing

A few weeks ago, I noticed that when I pulled away there was a slight 'boinnng' noise from the rear (O/S I think). Not much of a description of a noise, I know, but how do you describe a noise in writing ? It sounded a bit like a spring suddenly being able to untwist, if you know what I mean.

It only seemed to happen when I was pulling away and I couldn't reproduce it on the road. Recently, it has been accompanied, or followed, by a small clonk.

I've had a quick look and not seen anything obvious - I.e. no sign of diff nose cracking, anti vibration straps in place and tight, all rubber mounts seem to be in good order - nor anything breaking or hanging loose. I have checked the tightness of all nuts and bolts and found almost everything tight. The only thing I found slightly less than tight was the four bolts holding the diff to the suspension arms (where the holes can go oval). I was optimistic that tightening these might have cured my problem but no such luck.

Obviously I'm going to have to investigate further but I'd welcome any tips, or hearing from anybody who has experienced a similar problem.

    Cheers

    Julian

Or possibly the trailing arm bushes might be worn allowing the spring to move.
Often difficult to tell if they are worn without getting the car on a ramp and looking more closely..

Yep, boinng said spring to me but couldn't see anything obvious at first glance. More detailed inspection is called for, methinks.

          Cheers Russ,

Yep, that makes sense as well Sam, thanks. Trouble is, the only ramp I know of has got something on it

I would imagine the rear suspension spring, if moving, would give a rather heavy boing where the brakes spring sound would be lighter and more like a rattly boing
I know what I mean but Julian is right how do you describe a boing type noise in words?
(Could be park brake sticking slightly and then lets go when the wheel moves)

It's ok Neil, I think I know what you mean.

My boinng is quite a 'heavy' sound and something to do with the spring seems favourite to me. It is now sometimes followed by a clunk.

What worries me is that I have found fairly significant rust in some places on the car and I'm just hoping it's not the spring mounts rusted - although it doesn't look like it at first glance

                      Cheers

Check you haven't got a stone wedged between the coil spring and the trailing arm where the spring sits in the hole in the trailing arm.

This happened to me years ago with my 2.5 PI saloon and it made just the noises you mention.

                              Thanks Guys,

Interesting one Neil. I hadn't thought of that, even though I experienced it on another car a few years ago - am I going to have to drop the arm out to get to the bottom of the spring ? Don't think my compressors will get in there.

                              Cheers
