    driveshaft question among others!

I wonder if anyone has seen ujs like this before. They dont look like they are installed correctly to me.These are in a subframe my fellow stag owning freind has collected this weekend (amongst a van load of other Stag related treasure!)

Also another question.....Can anyone spread any light on this number from a MK1 engine the following which is also strangly different from the norm.... LF2322ESS

    Hi Neil,

ESS suffixes were put on factory reconditioned engines, I believe.

    Cheers

I think I have seen a picture of uj's like that with an internal circlip on Datsun converted shafts.
Probably seen it on here at some time.

The UJs on my car looked like this. No idea how they're supposed to come apart.

Those are what are described as 'staked' u/js. It is a specialised job replacing them. They were standard on some Stags but I don't recollect when in production.

          Cheers

          Julian

Ps Apparently, staked U/Js were fitted up until around LD 32900 but, as with most Triumph documentation, I'd take that with a pinch of salt

I'm pretty sure these are Datsun half shafts after doing some digging myself. Nice to get an oracle to confirm though. I know there's a few out there!
Thanks for the info on the engine too. These details seem hard to identify but now I've discovered a few more people have "ESS" engines. I think this one has been rebuilt since the factory days though so it will be difficult to know exactly what it is now without taking it to pieces.

              Neil,

If you look at the photo I posted in reply to Julian's question about rear end noise you will see that the drive shaft just visible s similar to the one in your photo. If it is, then they are Datsun conversion driveshafts. Difficult to get hold of now as the source has almost dried up in the UK.

And yes, ESS is the factory replacement engine suffix.

I had a set of shafts like that. I managed to get them apart by using a dremel to grind away the staking. I couldn't get a staking tool to refit the different ujs though so ended up with circlip type shafts.

Yes my engine is also ESS, factory replacement, most likely under warrantee.
It was also full of parting sand when I rebuilt her, you could have built a sand castle on the drive after I pressure washed the waterways on the drive!

At least you knew it was a genuine factory engine.

They are Datsun drive shafts and the Triumph differential yokes have been machined to accept the Datsun UJs. This is the better method of installing the Datsun shafts to the car. The other method is to use hybrid "Tridat" UJs. They are virtually maintenance free and transform the handling of the car.

I have the staked type drive shafts what is the special tool needed for installing them? Is it the case of using a pointed chisel or punch to stake them? I have a spare set that I might have a go with,

                          cheers Stuart

The staking must make as a secure job of holding the Uj bearing cap as a circlip. So you need multiple equaly spaced displacement of the parent metal. How you achieve that without a staking tool and press is up for debate! A punch / chisel and hammer is probably not going to cut the mustard I'm afraid.

I have never used one but I can remember from many moons ago Moprod? kits being available for replacing staked joints although I have no idea if they were ever available to suit the Stag.

Following the recent hub failure on my car I am temporarily running with an old staked shaft which has had one of the uj's replaced by a PO. His solution was to tack weld the uj caps to the yoke to keep them in place! Hell of a bodge but it's keeping me on the road at the moment.
