Electric water pump - which kit to use

Hi all - I waited 30 years to buy a Stag. Had it 5 weeks now and not even driven it (not counting when I was being towed) - it's at the garage for some work.

Garage (who's also a friend and he knows what he's doing but isn't a Stag specialist) has now got to the bottom of the reason why it keeps overheating. I did have a faulty overflow and it dropped the coolant and got a bit hot. Only damage done is that they already dodgy water pump (that some previous engineer has rammed in) has given up.

Given that the pump position is a weak link and the cost for a replacement is quite high I thought I'd ask him to replace with an electric. I've seen some good reports about electric pumps and wondered about other people's experience? (We've already fitted a Stabweber header tank unit).

Which kit should I tell him to get? I've also heard that the heater might be an issue.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Once I'm on the road I hope to see some of you (already booked Silverstone)

    Thanks

    Chris L-D.

The only electric pump kit that I know of is a Davis Craig pump ,I think they come from Australia but I think there is a supplier in the uk.

I have a Davies Craig electric pump fitted to one Stag engine and a Stagdad belt drive conversion fitted to another, both do the job well.

My electric pump kit is only a basic one I cobbled together myself without the controller unit. Heater output is no problem but I have retained the thermostat against the advice of the manufacturers as it gives the desired back pressure to make the water flow round the heater circuit rather than spending a fortune on a second pump

I've had the Stagdad belt driven pump in for over a year now, no problems at all and heater works fine.

          Hi Chris

I have have a brand new unused Craig Davies water pump with the controller if you need one - it was taken in part payment for some work I did for another stag owner, but decided not to install it in the end.
Let me know if you are interested. It is a 110 if I remember right.

          Cheers...Al

          Edit: or Davis Craig even..

A word of warning when replacing the pump with an external pump in conjuntion with a header tank that feeds in through the stub on top of the pump cover. It will pump coolant up thought the header tank because you have moved the pump and what was a low pressure area which would suck coolant from the tank will now be a high pressure area (Coolant is being pushed into it from the pump upstream)and so will push coolant into the tank filling it up in a matter of seconds ,i know because i tried it when someone asked if the header tank plumbed this way could be used with an external pump.Simple solution is feed the header tank into a low point on the side of the radiator (cost about £30 to have it modified at a rad repair shop).

              Cheers Steve

I have the Davis Craig pump and am pleased with it, but you will have to make up your own plumbing and sort out the heater return. Stagdad has engineered a belt driven pump kit, so all the hard work is done for you. His advice and product is good.

I have had the DC EWP setup on a Dolomite Sprint. I have to say that Davis Craig's after sales service was superb.

As has been said, in order to get a good heater, you will hear about a variety of methods regarding whether a thermostat is used and the plumbing of the heater hoses.

                    Hi Guys

Thanks for all the advice. I haven't managed to speak to the garage today so don't know what progress he's made. Will try shortly.

Picked up that Al's got a spare - will put a further update on once I know progress they've made.

Cheers - and hope to see you all soon but the chances of getting it back for this weekend now looking slim!

Where do you pick up 110 volts from in a Stag?

The 110 relates how many litres it pushes round per minute, they do a EWP80 a 110 and 130.

Bearing in mind that we've already fitted a header tank and the potential problems of an EWP pumping the coolant into it rather than round the system the garage is thinking of going for the "Stagdad" belt driven option. I'm looking into that further. Any thoughts?

Chris the warning about having to plumb the header tank in a different place would apply to any external pump fitted upstream including mine,I will PM you.
