    BW 65 auto box knocking/ticking

I have refurbished my recently acquired Stag Auto but had the auto box checked out by a Southhampton auto box specialist while I rebuilt the engine. I refitted the box with a new torque converter but shortly after recommissioning a knock/tapping developed. The box changes gear OK but I feel that the knocking is getting worse. Firstly, any ideas? Secondly, any recommendations for a good auto service specialist near Calne, Wiltshire.

Could be a crack in the flexplate or the plate loose on the crank/converter bolts loose. Unusual for a 65 to knock, but it is possible for tge converter to be in trouble.

You need to go underneath and listen - assuming it happens when the car is at rest but in gear...

What is the frequency of the knock, every second, minute etc?

Also does it happen when driving, in park etc

best thing to do is record it and send it too Russ, he did mine and was spot on with the cause, layshaft and it cured itself as he said it would

sorry Russ, but who else can do this

          Hi Russ
Flexplate looked ok when I reassembled but I didn't do an in-depth crack test. All fixings were torqued up as per spec. The torque converter was a new unit but that could have been a duff one. Having moved to a smaller property with a shoe box garage I can no longer avail myself of a the luxury of a pit, hence the need to find a reputable auto garage. Thanks for you comments. Kind regards. Andy

You dion't need to do an in depth crack test, the flex plate will crack inbetween the bolt holes or around the outside of the bolt holes. or if the converter bolts are loose it will chatter on the flex plate, this will show up more on a stall test. Really you need to carry out some more tests Eg is the noise at idle, under load, in gear, out of gear, reverse, driving, stationary, ect. But as Russ says you need to get down and get dirty to try to acertain where the noise is coming from it may not even be the box. Graham

There is another possibility, something that happened to an infrequent forum user... I was asked to listen to a knocking noise that at first appeared to be the torque converter area, this time on a ZF 4 speed. I was told that the converter had been renewed because of it but it had made no difference. I wasn't convinced that it was gearbox end despite a very reputable company saying so, and I thought it could be front jackshaft bearing knock, but was told that it couldn't be as the engine had recently been rebuilt.

A few weeks later the jackshaft siezed.

Not to dispute your diagnosed area, have you had timing chains or any other similar work done? Over tightened chains and/or excessive oil pressure will give a misleading knock as will a loose crankshaft bolt.....
I would sugfest you find a local experienced member to lend an ear before cluttering off to an auto specialist. .
